On Abortion: "Government should stay out of it... The ultimate decision must be made by the women... Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own." -- Fred Thompson, July 1994
Are the Social Cons ignorant of Thompson's background?
Back in the early to mid-1990s, there was a raging battle in the Republican Party between the Moderates/Libertarians versus the Religious Right. On one side there was Ann Stone's Republicans For Choice, the Ripon Society, Log Cabin Clubs and the organization that I had founded in 1990 - the Republican Liberty Caucus. On the other side was the Religious Right.
Tennessee was right smack dab in the middle of it all.
The leader of the TN Anti-Religious Right forces at the time was Michael McCloskey.
During the same time, Fred Thompson was making noises of running for the US Senate. McCloskey was one of the ones who was influential in recruiting him to run. McCloskey saw him as a Celebrity counter-force to the Religious Right/Pro-Lifers that could win the GOP Nomination.
And the Religious Right, predictably came after Thompson. It was a bitterly fought primary. Thompson's opponent was Religious Rightist John Bakkes. In the end, Thompson's celebrity status carried him through, and he won with 62% to Bakkes's 37%. Many credited McCloskey and his "Young Republican brigades" with helping Thompson's win.

Murphey:
Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?
Thompson:
Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the women. Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own.
You say you want to stop hillary, yet you are promoting a candidate with almost the same views, way to go.

Afraid of the truth?
This is HISTORICAL FACT:

Not afraid of the truth. Just tired of the FUD from the rudy bots. The ones who have no standing trying to cry “he’s pro choice” considering their 100% NARAL rated candidate.
The truth:
- Fred Thompson was endorsed by a pro life group when he ran in 1994
- Fred Thompson has a solid pro life voting record in the senate
- Fred Thompson has a zero rating from NARAL
- Fred Thompson has said Roe V wade was bad law.
National Right to Life Committee on Fred Thompson:
This morning, I cited reports being promoted by the pro-Romney blog Evangelicals for Mitt suggesting that Fred Thompson ran his two campaigns for Senate in Tennessee as a pro-choicer. Not so, National Right to Life executive co-director Darla St. Martin just told me.
St. Martin said that she went down to Tennessee in 1994 to speak with Thompson personally when he first ran for Senate, and that she determined he was against abortion.
I interviewed him and on all of the questions I asked him, he opposed abortion, St. Martin said. She told me that the group went on to support him in that election, and his record reinforced for her that their determination was correct.
He has a consistent voting record that is pro-life, she said.
On the NRLC website, they archive their congressional ratings back to 1997, so they include six of his eight years in the Senate. Thompson took the pro-life position on every vote he cast on the abortion issue

NARAL also rated nine other Republicans Based on their abortion rights stance, the following Republicans received a grade of F: Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee
“WALLACE: Would you like to overturn Roe. ...
THOMPSON: You said lightning round, now. If you want ...”
In other words he was waffling, didn’t say a categorical “YES”.
This has been posted at least 3 times today that I have seen, and it’s been posted many times over the last few weeks. is there a reason you need to post it againt? Haven’t you been on Free Republic to know how things are done, or is this an orchestrated campaign?
Do you really think you will win over Republicans using left wing tactics?
The Social Cons have never fully trusted Rudy Giuliani. All it took was one small misstep by Giuliani the other day on abortion, for them to bail. Now the Blogosphere is loaded with "Run Fred, Run!" articles and posts.
If I was shilling for Rudy, I'd cut that part, too. Can't have people thinking that when people learn Rudy's real views that they bail on him now can we?
If he decides to run, I personally, will be out on the streets for him. I'm tired of pushing the button for the lessor of two evils.
Rudybaby,LameCain, and Romus are all Rinos. I'm sick of them. You folks go ahead and support those who you think have a better chance. Me, I will support the most conservative candidate. Yes, I'll waste my vote - deal with it! I may even vote Constitution Party if need be.
Is this forum about supporting conservatism above party or NOT?
Your desperation emits an unpleasant smell.
At what time? Why have you redacted this important fact?

CAUTION: This is a very high volume ping list. You may receive between 5 and 10 pings a day. If you'd rather not receive so many pings, let me know and I'll only ping you once a week.
Your candidate is pro-abortion. You should be proud of that without spreading calculated deception.
It's the fresh talking point from the pro-abortion anti-gun Rudyphiles.
One supports conservatism when one defeats Democrats.
