One of the little secrets about RC priests is that a fair number are alcoholic. Our parish priest, an recovering alcoholic himself, says part of the problem with several of the other priests is that with 6 masses per Sunday, they end up drinking a good amount of wine. He learned to ask the Eucharistic Ministers to drink the excess wine for him.

This was just done in our parish. Folks here call it the "throne".

So, what you are telling all us Protestants is that too much JJ (Not, OJ, but Jesus juice) will turn you into a drunkard. You would think that drunk on Jesus -- see Ephesians 5:18, etc. -- would not put one at risk of the fires of Hell for being a drunkard.

Do you suppose that 1 Co 5:11 would come into play for any priest a little too zealous for the Eucharist or is there a Drunk on Jesus exception in Catholic Tradition? After all, I can't imagine this is a recent problem.

Wait, I just figured it out. Drinking the Eucharistic wine, even if one becomes a drunkard, is doing to will of God so there is the exception.

Woody.

P.S. This is almost as funny as the Catholics who are allergic to Jesus, er I mean the crackers.

I think the theological rationale is that the wine becomes the blood yet the "accidents" remain.

So the priest gets drunk accidentally?

I guess that Jesus should come with his own blood alcoholicity label.
