I think one of the biggest mistakes back "in those days" is that Catholics were not really taught to think.
There was a time when priests and Bishops were not lying--and when they actually understood the Catholic Faith.
That time ended right around the time that JFK was elected.
Only took the laity 30 years to figure it out.
Still going on these days...unfortunately, I see it right here on FR. It seems that many/most people who desert Christ are those who escape from the Catholic dogma.
Fortunately, many land elsewhere in Christian lives.
