New rules for taking communion issued
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | July 17, 2003 | CATHLEEN FALSANI

While the changes might seem minor, the first revisions the Vatican has made to the mass since 1975 will affect every Roman Catholic who walks forward for communion.

Before they take the bread and wine, they'll have to bow, as a sign of reverence for the Eucharist, the bread and wine Roman Catholics believe becomes the actual body and blood of Christ during the mass.

Catholics also must be quieter during the mass, sitting meditatively in silence before it begins, after the homily, and after they receive communion instead of chatting with neighbors, or whispering to the kids.

The 2/3 of our parishes which buy OCP

That's a major problem. OCP isn't particularly Catholic.

Same here. I do not sing the Marty Haugen/David Hass type material. I don't know the words and when I look them up I find they are banal and meaningless. But ya know, I think we are in the vast minority outside of FR! Eagles Wings usually elicits many voices.

I just get kind of offended when a person makes a dialogue and has a made up part for God. And a lot of the lyrics are ambiguous and IMO promote that the Eucharist is the community, stuff like that. Conflicting for my kids, upsetting for me.

Ya, that is illicit. And I've heard it before at my parish.

Sometimes I just want to ask my priest and other Catholics that I know, whether they believe that Jesus Christ left us only one Church, and if they do believe it, which one is it?

I'm having fits that my daughter has been assigned "Josua" by Fr. Girzone for summer reading for her religion class in Catholic HS. I found out that her freshman religion teacher is a member of Voice of the Faithful, so I don't know why I was surprised when I read "Josua." Fits right in with the "hierarchy is bad, organized religion is bad, community service is more important than knowing why you are a Catholic."

I don't know if OCP is a cause of the liturgical problem, a symptom of the problem, or both.
I do know that they publish with the approval of the Archbishop of Portland who I understand is the publisher-in-chief (or some such title).
I wonder if he draws a salary from them?

The people in our parish kneel till the priest closes the Tabernacle door, despite being instructed by the priest to sit immediately after Communion.

You are paying for a Catholic education and being shortchanged (IMNSHO). Time to demand a refund.

It's pretty sad when the people have more reverence regarding the Body of Christ than the priest does.

It's a thing with tradition, too. I think most of us "regular" people are loathe to change the one thing that hasn't and shouldn't change greatly unless there is a legitimate reason - it's a connection with all that went before, sort of like an unending chain of rememberance.

Sometimes I think some priests have more in common with the closed world of academia than they do the world containing the unwashed masses. Most of the progressive bs has come out of academia - both political and religious. And it all seems to be somehow mysteriously intertwined.

OCP is a symptom. The music stuff started long before OCP's inception.

OCP is just easy. That's why a lot of places do it.

Ya know what? She hasn't even started yet. This is the first time my kids have gone "Catholic" regarding schools. I am going to give it a chance and pay very close attention to her religious classes... the academics there are beyond reproach, but the religion seems more focused on ecumenical community service and very little centers on Catholicism. Wish I knew then (making the decision & paying the tuition) what I know now.

But the choice between a public school that advocates homosexuality and frames all moral questions exactly opposite to what we would and a Catholic school that is really Christian in content, but who will frame moral questions more like we would, WHAT DO YOU DO???

All too often, the seminaries are reinforcing the teachings of the world, instead of insisting upon the teachings of the Church.

Well, fortunately our priest doesn't push the sitting after partaking rule. He merely put it in the bulletin some years back but never made an issue of it. Likewise, when we recently renovated our church I think he would have liked to have been a little more radical. He often talked about liking "churches in the round". But he respected the wishes of the people in the parish and the church is quite beautiful and the tabernacle remains front and center.

Are you in a position to home school? I think I would go that route if I had it to do it over.

I think the one most noticeable was kneeling from the end of the Sanctus through the beginning of the Our Father.

In the original GIRM, standing was OK except at the Consecration.

Not at St. Agnes in St. Paul.

The rest: that's Roach and his successor.

WOrse, Proulx's "Ubi Caritas" is a damn-near-direct ripoff of the arrangement by Durufle--except Proulx' is banal

Yup. Among other things, that reduces the element of "work" in the job of Music Director (used to be called organist, but had to have a professional title, more $$$.)

And the sad thing is so many people like it.
