I found the this quote to be most revealing:
I want the church to be a strong supporter of traditional marriage, for instance, but I also want it to make room for gays and lesbians who feel anguish because their monogamous relationships are not recognized. At times I feel as though these heresy trials are being staged not only within the courts of the church, but also within myself.
