In fact, an old Austrian hymnal (c. 1625) shows David and the Pope, with a cithara (zither) and cross, on the cartouche. This representation is also found in the North Rose Window at Chartres Cathedral. (!)
Thus the connection between cross and cithara--cult and culture. Further note the oft-repeated connection between David and Melchisidek--the Singer and Priest...

Interesting observations between cult and culture. How can they be the same thing, however? I can see the linkage (relationship) between the two -- but not interpreted as one.
Or am I misreading your thoughts here?
