The Curé d'Ars prayer group for the Bishop and priests of the Raleigh Diocese, NC.

Last updated April 28, 2003

   “Oh, how great is a priest! The priest will not understand the greatness of his office  till he is in Heaven. If he understood it on earth, he would die, not of fear, but of love.

  The other benefits of God would be of no avail to us without the priest.                What would be the use of a house full of gold, if you had nobody to open you the door! The priest has the key of the heavenly treasures; it is he who opens the door; he is the steward of the good God, the distributor of His wealth. “ The Curé D’ars.

  The apostolate of this particular group is to pray daily for more holy priests in the Raleigh diocese and for our bishop Joseph Gossman.

  To join the prayer group enroll here.

Below are the prayers that each member is required to say every day:

Prayer for our Bishop Joseph Gossman

To be said Daily

Heavenly Father, in these trying times when the spirit of the age threatens Christian values, give our bishop holiness of life and wisdom to direct and guide our diocesan family so that we may grow in your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

           Prayer for Holy Priests

 To be said Daily

  My Dear Jesus, Thou desirest that we pray the Lord of the Harvest that He send zealous laborers into His harvest. Deign to raise up in Thy Church, and especially in this diocese, numerous and holy priests who, taking Thy Divine Heart as their Model, will, in the exercise of their holy priesthood, promote the glory of Thy heavenly Father and the salvation of those souls whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy Precious Blood. Give us truly holy priests who, inflamed with the fire of Thy divine love, seek nothing but Thy greater glory and the salvation of souls.

  O Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us; obtain for us a number of holy priests.

Prayer To Be Said at the Priest's Communion

  O Lord,                                                               may Thou find shelter and rest gently within the heart of Thy priest________.

  Make him, O Lord, a priest according to Thy heart: meek, humble, zealous, so that all he does will be for Thine honor and glory.  Mold him into a man of prayer and labor, insensible to earthly things, and sensible only to Thy love and to the graces of the Holy Ghost.  Amen.

  O Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us; obtain for us a number of holy priests.

***The other benefits of God would be of no avail to us without the priest.***

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Every believver is a priest according to Peter!

Prayer To Be Said at the Priest's Communion

It will be kind of tough to say this one unless you go to a Latin Mass. The Priest's Communion has been eliminated at the New Mass. Of course, the priest gives himself communion, but Now he just receives along with the congregation. This was a specific part of the Mass which no longer exists. In fact, it was one of the 3 essential parts (the others being the Offertory (which also no longer exists) and the consecration).

Vesting Prayers

When washing the hands:

Da, Domine, virtutem manibus meis ad abstergendum omnem maculam ut sine pollutione mentis et corporis valeam tibi servire.

Give virtue to my hands, O Lord, that being cleansed from all stain I might serve you with purity of mind and body.

With the amice:

Impone, Domine, capiti meo galeam salutis, ad expugnandos diabolicos incursus.

Place upon me, O Lord, the helmet of salvation, that I may overcome the assaults of the devil.

With the alb:

Dealba me, Domine, et munda cor meum; ut, in sanguine Agni dealbatus, gaudiis perfruare sempiternis.

Purify me, O Lord, and cleanse my heart; that, being made white in the Blood of the Lamb, I may come to eternal joy.

With the cincture:

Praecinge me, Domine, cingulo puritatis, et exstingue in lumbis meis humorem libidinis; ut maneat in me virtus continentia et castitatis.

Gird me, O Lord, with the girdle of purity, and extinguish in me all evil desires, that the virtue of chastity may abide in me.

With the maniple:

Merear, Domine, portare manipulum fletus et doloris; ut cum exsultatione recipiam mercedem laboris.

Grant, O Lord, that I may so bear the maniple of weeping and sorrow, that I may receive the reward for my labors with rejoicing.

With the stole:

Redde mihi, Domine, stolam immortalitatis, quam perdidi in praevaricatione primi parentis: et, quamvis indignus accedo ad tuum sacrum mysterium, merear tamen gaudium sempiternum.

Restore unto me, O Lord, the stole of immortality, which was lost through the guilt of our first parents: and, although I am unworthy to approach Your sacred Mysteries, nevertheless grant unto me eternal joy.

With the chasuble:

Domine, qui dixisti: Iugum meam suave est et onus meum leve: fac, ut istud portare sic valeam, quod consequar tuam gratiam. Amen.

O Lord, Who said: My yoke is easy and My burden light: grant that I may bear it well and follow after You with thanksgiving. Amen.

--The Beautiful Hands of a Priest--

We need them in life's early morning,
We need them again at its close;
We feel their warm clasp of true friendship,
We seek them when tasting life's woes.
At the altar each day we behold them,
And the hands of a king on his throne
Are not equal to them in their greatness;
Their dignity stands all alone;
And when we are tempted and wander,
To pathways of shame and of sin,
It's the hand of a priest that will absolve us--
Not once, but again and again.
And when we are taking life's partner,
Other hands may prepare us a feast,
But the hand that will bless and unite us--
Is the beautiful hand of a priest.
God bless them and keep them all holy,
For the Host which their fingers caress;
When can a poor sinner do better,
Than to ask Him to guide thee and bless?
When the hour of death comes upon us,
May our courage and strength be increased,
By seeing raised over us in blessing--
The beautiful hands of a priest.
