[history]
Bishop Allen Vigneron, the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church in the East Bay, arrives with conservative credentials, friends in the Vatican and a hard act to follow.
Vigneron, an auxiliary bishop in Detroit, was named by Pope John Paul II last week to replace retiring Bishop John Cummins, a popular and relatively liberal prelate who has gently shepherded the Diocese of Oakland for the past 25 years.

I'll go out on a limb and guess that Bernie Ward sees this as an unfavorable development.

First, Oakland gets a great bishop, then wins the Super Bowl. Lucky town.

Bishop Vigneron is an outstanding man with an outstanding mind and real reverence for the sacred. He is proactively evangelistic and outreaching. If only the 35 Bishops that might retire this year would be replaced with men like Vigneron, it would be a new day for the Church in the U.S.

If only the 35 Bishops that might retire this year would be replaced with men like Vigneron, it would be a new day for the Church in the U.S. Indeed! That would be a lot to hope for.

Bishop Vigneron is on the Ave Maria Board of Trustees, which is a good sign. Fr. Fessio said the diocese is very lucky to be getting him.

Thanks for the ping and the good news although the Archdiocese of Detroit will sorely miss him. I liked this quote from the article:
"My mission is to be the bishop and witness to the Catholic faith," he said. "The church articulates Christ's vision of the human person and the life we have to live. That is what I'll stand up for. What's outside of that, I will challenge."

But some East Bay priests are worried that Vigneron may have been brought into Oakland to more strictly enforce Catholic orthodoxy. Well duh!
