Gwen Watson, a longtime parishioner at Christ the King Parish in Pleasant Hill, will be coming to San Francisco on Saturday and marching down Market Street with thousands of other anti-war demonstrators.

Watson, 66, has been a Catholic social justice activist since the 1960s, when she took her kids to meet the late Cesar Chavez and rallied with the United Farm Workers.

You could start by telling her where you get your information. But then you might have to defend it.

"I went to the Nevada test site protests on New Year's and it was mostly gray-hairs and leftover '60s and '50s people," said Watson, a retired schoolteacher. "In every group, I'm trying to get more young people involved."

It's not that we don't believe in peace and justice, we just believe that National Security is vital. There is also a movement among younger Catholics toward orthodoxy and maintaining a conservative family life which includes not just love of Christ and Church, but responsibilty for national security. Christ never said for us to turn our backs to defense.

That and the peace and justice types are really flakey. They can't admit that the 70's are over and we youngin's aren't interested in reliving it.

Justice or social justice.

Pick one.

Was it Hayek who pointed out that you can make a word mean its opposite by putting the adjective social in front of it?

The peace& justice movment is graying and gaying. A large number of the few younger Catholics who are part of the peace& justice wing are either gay/lesbian or the odd 3rd generation red diaper baby.

Keep in mind that this is in one of the most liberal areas in the US as well. If the Peace & Justice wing of the church is doing this badly in the Bay Area, I cant imagine how badly it is withering in other areas.

Halleluia!! Great news!

Younger Catholics are not buying the idea that hippie activism is a valid means of living the Catholic Faith. The secularism of these "activist" priests is impossible to miss. Those who truly hunger for the Faith are not going to find much in common with them.

I wonder how many of these same Catholics would admit, even in private, to having a few reservations about abortion-on-demand? And I wonder whether the Chronicle would give them banner headlines if they spoke out about it? No, on second thought, I don't really wonder.
