St. Nicholas is one of my favorites because he beat up Arius for talking bad about the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Now that's a saint I can identify with.

St. Nicholas is one of my favorites because he beat up Arius for talking bad about the Blessed Virgin Mary. And for THAT he is also the Patron Saint of Boxers! Another thing I have heard regarding the battles with the Arian heresy is that Nicholas is one of the bishops responsible for the phrase "God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God" in the creed. This was to battle the Arian belief that Jesus was not Divine. For more on the Arian Heresy see this entry from the Catholic Encyclopedia.

With that long beard, it's understandable how Santa Claus involved from St. Nicholas.

Regarding "Santa Claus," I've always liked this depiction. Usually accompanied by the phrase "Jesus is the reason for the season!"
