The doctrine of indulgences is, they agree, a development of the ancient practice of praying for the dead. Yes, she was judged at the moment of her death, which is in God's eyes the same as now or indeed the very moment of Creation. Mom's God is big enough to be master of time when it comes to her considering herself "clean" when she clearly isn't yet. But he's not big enough to be master of time when it comes to our prayers for the dearly departed.
