Unholy Hands on God's Holy Book

Producing a Gender Neutral Bible

By E. L. Bynum

Bible believers are constantly amazed by the brazen efforts of mortal man to change the Word of God. In the last 50-years, we have seen assault after assault upon the infallible Word of God. The RSV, NASV, NIV, and the so-called Living Bible have chipped away the foundations laid by God Himself. No sooner are they finished with a new Bible, than they set out to revise it, or to produce another Bible under another name.

The New International Version (NIV), appeared on the scene back in the 70s. It first appeared as the work of the New York Bible Society. We opposed this version soon after it came out. In correspondence with the General Secretary of the New York Bible Society, we voiced our disapproval. I wrote a tract voicing our rejection of this perversion of the Word of God. We still print and distribute Should We Trust The New International Version?" (It is Tract # A-217, and you can obtain it from Tabernacle Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3100, Lubbock, TX 79452. Send $5.00 for 50 copies, postpaid in the USA.)

The New Gender Neutral TNIV

Several years ago, in Great Britain, a new NIV that was gender neutral was printed. Then they proceeded to produce one in the United States. There was widespread opposition among even those that had supported the NIV. As a result, they withdrew that new revision and signed an agreement that they would not do this. Now they are proceeding with this mutilation of the Word of God.

Regardless of what they say, this TNIV is an effort to appease the feminists, who want to dismantle the biblical order, and set up a feminine way of thinking. As far as we know they have not feminized God in their false Bible, but that will likely come next. It is a bold and vicious attempt to remove the masculine emphasis in the Bible. Without any textual authority from the Greek language, they have changed "him" to "them." They have changed "man" to "mortals" and many other examples are cited below. The NIV did not do this, but the TNIV dares to do it. We are not going to quote the NIV, because we consider it a bogus Bible in the first place.

Please notice the few Scriptures below in the King James Version, and see how they have butchered these verses in the Today's New International Version (TNIV). We have put many words in bold face type, so that you can see the awful changes that they have made.

The KJV Compared to the TNIV

Heb. 2:6-7 (KJV) "What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour." (TNIV) "What are mere mortals that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You made them a little lower than the angels; You crowned them with glory and honor."

Luke 17:3 (KJV) Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. (TNIV) If any brother or sister sins against you, rebuke the offender; and if they repent, forgive them.

John 6:33 (KJV) For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. (TNIV) "For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

John 6:35 (KJV) And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. (TNIV) Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

Acts 4:4 (KJV) Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. (TNIV) But many who heard the message believed, and the number of believers grew to about five thousand.

Acts 7:20 (KJV) In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months. (TNIV) "At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for in his parents' home."

Acts 17:22 (KJV) Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. (TNIV) Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious."

Acts 20:30 (KJV) Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. (TNIV) "Even from your own number some will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them."

Romans 3:28 (KJV) Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. (TNIV) For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

Hebrews 12:7 (KJV) If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? (TNIV) Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their parents?

James 1:12 (KJV) Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (TNIV) Blessed are those who persevere under trial, because when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

James 3:1 (KJV) My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. (TNIV) Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers and sisters, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

Revelation 3:20 (KJV) Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (TNIV) Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me.

Many Other Gender Changes

These are only a very few of the gender changes found in the TNIV. These people have the audacity to think that they can change what God has said, in order to be politically correct. Do not think for one minute that they will be satisfied with this unholy desire to change the Word of God. They have placed their unholy hands, guided by their unholy minds, upon the Holy Word of God. They are following the example of the serpent who freely changed the Word of God to suit himself. "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" (Genesis 3:1) Satan is the founder of the "Yea, hath God said" Society, and the TNIV Committee is doing his work for him.

Who Are The Backers of TNIV?

From the Web Page of the TNIV, we take the following quote.

"Background on the Committee on Bible Translation. The TNIV was developed by the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT), the same group that produced the NIV. The CBT includes renowned, conservative linguists and biblical scholars from the most trusted institutions in the world. They come from a variety of denominational affiliations and theological backgrounds. This diversity creates a system of checks and balances, ensuring absolute accuracy."

What a cruel joke that these people would claim "absolute accuracy," for their mutilation of the Word of God. They indicate that their scholars come from the following institutions.

Academic Institutions: Wheaton College ·· Calvin Theological Seminary ·· Dallas Theological Seminary ·· Regent College ·· Westmont College ·· Tyndale Theological Seminary ·· Spurgeon's College (London) ·· Trinity Evangelical Divinity School ·· Beeson Divinity School ·· Bethel Seminary ·· North Park Theological Seminary

They list their scholars (?) as being from the following denominations. I am horrified that anyone who claimed to be an Independent Baptist would approve of this unscriptural work. However, the title Independent Baptist, covers a lot of sin and error today. It is almost surprising that the Roman Catholic Church is not mentioned also.

Denominations: Southern Baptist ·· Baptist ·· Independent Baptist ·· Baptist General Conference ·· Christian Reformed ·· Assemblies of God ·· Presbyterian Church in America ·· Evangelical Covenant ·· Independent ·· Church of England

We quote the following taken from their web page.

"The CBT's sole mission is to accurately communicate the meaning of the original text in contemporary English. This group has earned the trust of over 150 million people (those who have had and used the NIV during the last 25 years) primarily because they have done their job well by clearly translating the original Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew languages into the English language without sacrificing accuracy. The TNIV upholds the same standards of accuracy, clarity and meticulous scholarship of the NIV. That same reliability underscores every change in this revision of the NIV, called the TNIV."

My comment on this statement is very simple. If they were faithful in translating the NIV, as they claim, why do they need the TNIV today? The answer should be obvious to all. They would not need it. Will they be satisfied with the TNIV? The answer must be a resounding NO! They will never be satisfied with confusing and misleading people by changing the Word of God. There will always be opportunities to change and confuse. Besides, there is a lot of money in the Bible publishing business. Take the big profits out of it, and the revisions of the Bible would slow to a crawl.

There is Opposition to the TNIV

Many who backed and used the NIV, are now opposing the TNIV. We are glad of their opposition, but where were these people when the glaring errors of the NIV were being exposed by others. The Baptist Press released the information that 26 scholars have refused to endorse the TNIV. We quote the following from BP.

"The 26 scholars who have stated their refusal to endorse the TNIV include two Southern Baptist Convention seminary presidents, R. Albert Mohler Jr. of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Paige Patterson of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, along with Wayne Grudem of Phoenix Seminary in Scottsdale, Ariz., and a past president of the Evangelical Theological Society; Harold O. J. Brown of Reformed Theological Seminary; R.C. Sproul of Ligonier Ministries; John Piper of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis; and Raymond C. Ortlund Jr. of First Presbyterian Church, Augusta, Ga."

The one-paragraph scholars' statement in full:

"In light of troubling translation inaccuracies -- primarily (but not exclusively) in relation to gender language -- that introduce distortions of the meanings that were conveyed better by the original NIV, we cannot endorse the TNIV translation as sufficiently accurate to commend to the church."

Another leading theologian, J.I. Packer, did not add his name to the signatories, but told Baptist Press: "This [TNIV] is a retrograde move that the translators have made. I have read a text of a statement by Wayne Grudem and others, and I find myself in sympathy with it. I find it to be a passing modern fad, frankly, to object to the inclusive masculine pronoun. To change the shape of biblical verses to fit this fad leads to a good bit of under-translation. The masculine pronoun belongs in almost every language of the world. The gains that this translation seeks to achieve are far outweighed by the loss. I appreciate the NIV, and I think they have taken a wrong turn." Packer is a theology professor at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, and the author of numerous books, including "Knowing God."

According to BP, James Dobson will not support the TNIV. Notice the following quote. James Dobson stated Feb. 5 he will not support the gender-neutral "Today's New International Version" revision of the widely used 1984 New International Version translation of the Bible. Dobson said, in a prepared statement:

"... I have now received sufficient feedback from a large number of evangelical scholars to convince me that this new work is a step backward in the field of biblical translation. Accordingly, I am now adding my name to the list of those who disagree with the liberties [the International Bible Society] has taken with God's Word in the new translation."

"I love the Scriptures and I know them to be the very words of God to His creation. Like most evangelical Christians, I want my Bible to contain an accurate translation of the canonical Hebrew and Greek texts. Accordingly, I will continue to speak out against any effort that alters God's Word or toys with translation methodology for the sake of `political correctness.'"

A Serious Question for the 26 Scholars

If you love the Bible and believe it to be the Word of God, why would you ever endorse the NIV in the first place? When you jump on the New Version Translation train, you never can be quite sure where it is headed. The Holy Spirit is not the Engineer of this unholy train that is headed for a destination that does not lead to God.

I saw the list of denominations of the scholars who supported the TNIV and I must say it is very sad to see how deeply entrenched the Cult of Alexandria(Bible "correctors" who think they are smarter than God.) is in the Christian body in America.

Is the christain body in America. The Christain body is found in some new testement local church.

If you are suggesting "the church" as in unveseral church, then you are following a false doctrine. When the bible talks about church or churches it is meaning local body of believes but never universal as many teach.

I was referring to Christianity as a whole, not some universal church.
