WAY OF THE CROSS
July 27, 2002

Posted on 07/27/2002 6:20:00 AM PDT by NYer

Fri Jul 26,10:51 PM ET

Actor Robert Legere, of St.Louis-de-Kent, New Brunswick, portraying Jesus Christ, reenacts the crucifixion as part of the World Youth Day celebrations, in Toronto, Ont. on Friday July 26, 2002.

An actor playing Jesus depicts the tortured stages of Christ's passage to the cross. He too is condemned to death, takes up his cross, falls under its weight and ultimately is hoisted above the crowd on that same crude frame.

Realism, said Ms. Parsons, is the objective. "It's an attempt to bring home the scarifices Jesus made for us."

For those who missed this incredible event, EWTN will repeat it on Saturday, July 27 at 1pm EST. The stations include prayers in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Latin. The accompanying music is from the Taize Community (more information to be posted on this later).

RnMomof7, please bump the protestant list. This portrayal transcends the boundaries that separate all christian religions.

I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.

I have always wanted to go to the passion play in Germany that I once saw on TV..It brought me to tears.

There is a non dem church in our area that has one at Easter time that hits you so hard..

I hope that the young people that saw this have a new wonder at the love and mercy of God!

Bumpted

This in some ways needs to happen more often. Although, except for the nails, a little more historical acuracy in regards to the cross would be a good thing, IMO. (okay, I'm knit-picky about such things)

It is a bit "contemporized". My guess is that the oversized cross used in the crucifixion part of the presentation, was chosen for purposes of visibility. Estimates put the crowd at close to 500,000. There was some interesting "creative license" taken in the depictions but the messages were written by the Holy Father himself. Personally, I learned some things that I had not known before ... like the name Veronica (vero icon). Or, the way Christ used his last hours on earth to continue to teach. This brought me beyond the interpretations to a more introspective and deeper understanding of the meaning of the Way of the Cross.

Not to be too nitpicky either...but it is not possible to replicate the kind of suffering He went through on our behalf.

When He went up on the cross, He had already been beaten to a pulp, cut to ribbons...He would have been nearly unrecognizable.

And of course, no man could represent the horror that descended upon Him when He experienced the penalty for all of our sins...His Father turning away from Him for that short period of time when even the Creation went dark.

In His Name, and in His service,
EV

I was in Oberammergau in Germany as they prepared for the most recent Passion Play. We visited Oberammergau frequently. However, the tickets were at a premium (impossible?) at that late date and we were leaving anyway before the event kicked off.

The U.S. military controlled a few tickets and those were randomly assigned. The odds of getting in were remote.

It is a human attempt. We, in no way, can we duplicate the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. But we can participate (imagination--remember--prayer--penance--feelings) as though we were there in person walking with the crowd that condemned Christ or the women whom he greeted or Veronica who wiped the face of Christ out of compassion and love.

A human attempt. Look at the glass as half-full rather than half-empty.

God bless,
Salvation

Truly, I wasn't trying to be critical...I appreciate the work done by these folks to portray the suffering of our Lord.

It was just that the pics at the top of this thread made me think of how bloody and bowed He really was...for us...and reminded me once again the incredible price He paid for my sin.

So they accomplished their goal, eh? :-)

Regards,
EV

Second Station

Jesus Takes Up His Cross

The song that followed this brought tears to my eyes, how we have given our sins to Jesus to carry them on the Corss.

Jesus is Condemned to Die

My Adorable Jesus, it was not Pilate, no, it was my sins that condemned Thee to die. I beseech Thee by the merits of this sorrowful journey, to assist my soul in its journey towards eternity. I love Thee, my beloved Jesus; I love thee more than myself; I repent with my whole heart for having offended Thee. Never permit me to separate myself from Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always, and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Jesus Takes Up His Cross

My Most beloved Jesus, I embrace all the tribulations Thou hast destined for me until death. I beseech Thee, by the merits of the pain Thou didst suffer in carrying Thy cross, to give me the necessary help, to carry mine with perfect patience and resignation. I love Thee, Jesus my Love; I repent of having offended Thee. Never permit me to separate myself from Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always; and then do with me what Thou wilt.
