Calvin the genius- indisputable.
Posted on 07/07/2002 12:00:21 AM PDT by saint
Okay, I've read every word uttered by Calvin, and I have to say that nobody who has read his complete works can honestly argue that Calvin was not genius.
From the time I was introduced to him I had to get my hands on everything I could read about him. I would read over and over everything he said. His grasp of truth for how to live is impeccable. I'm sorry, but if you don't agree that the philosphy of Calvin is liberating, then there is no hope for you and your humorless soul.
Before I was introduced to Calvin Sundays were a drag. Back in 1985 I found Calvin and I started looking forward to Sundays. It was great because my whole family joined me. We were living for the next bit of truth we could glean from this genius. Since then we've gone back to his utterances many times and never found anything to dislike about this guy. Here's just a bit from him for those not familiar:
"We all want meaningful lives. We look for meaning in everything we do. But suppose there is no meaning! Suppose life is fundamentally absurd! What if nothing means anything? What if nothing really matters?"
And here we may think something such as "I guess there's no harm in a little wishful thinking". But then Calvin goes on to say:
"Or suppose everything matters. Which would be worse?"
Pure genius! I just love the way he takes us over that cliff with him. Knowhatimean?
My family still grieves that his creator ended Calvin's existence too soon. But I guess the pressure was on. We were overwhelmed by him, yet wish there were more. Here's to the best comic strip ever: Calvin & Hobbes, 1985-1995.
Oh, and one more quote from the genius Calvin;
"Sooner or later, all our games turn into Calvinball."
Kinda reminds me of some of these FR posts.
Have a good day.

My family still grieves that his creator ended Calvin's existence too soon. It was predestined. As is your family grief and my reply to your post. I have to go now. Destiny calling.

Great post, saint. I think the other Calvin is pretty cool too!
Very creative. However, your opening sentence, "Okay, I've read every word uttered by Calvin, and I have to say that nobody who has read his complete works can honestly argue that Calvin was not genius." gave you away. Nobody I know has ever read all of the 59 volumes of John Calvin (Corpus Reformatorum)!

Rats - and I was prepped to spill my proof text!
1Cor1
19For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." 20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

I enjoyed it, too. He had me fooled and I was wondering how he could maintain his claim that he read every word Calvin uttered. I'm sure that John's weren't and couldn't have been written down. Some times I have Floriduh moments. LOL!
