While I was walking the dog this morning, I passed by the Elementary School. They recently put sealer on the parking lot so it was glossy black, and three days of rain covered the entire lot with a thin film of water. The sun came up, chased the clouds away, and suddenly the parking lot became an exquisite mirror. The Sunrise, the Blue Sky, and the fiery Autumn Colors of the trees surrounding the parking lot were all reflecting in the still waters. I fumbled for my phone to take a picture as Tippy tugged on the leash

Suddenly a voice in my head said, "STOP!" This is for EYES ONLY".

I recognized the expression from the many Native American Pow-Wows I have attended. "EYES ONLY" is a respectful request to refrain from video and photography, because a particular dance is considered a Prayer.

Evidently, this exquisite moment in time was a little gift to me from God, and He wanted it to stay that way. A picture wouldn't have done it justice anyway.

Hence, the Second Commandment!

With Plagiarism a big issue these days, I have become increasingly aware of the need to attribute things correctly and provide links whenever possible. That is especially true when quoting apocryphal little "Sermon Stories" which are peppered all over the Internet. I especially like This One, but there are pages of links to the same story, all claiming different authorship. So I guess we shall have to say that the author is "Unknown".

There was a group of women in a Bible Study on the book of Malachi. As they were studying chapter three, they came across verse three, which says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver". This verse puzzled the women and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study. That week, this woman called up a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work.

She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot then she thought again about the verse, that "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver". She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, how do you know when the silver is fully refined? He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy—when I see my image in it".

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.



Now, I may add that the Jewelry Makers at my Art College were stuck in the far corner of the well-ventilated basement. This is because, when they melted the silver in the crucible, it gave off a terrible odor. That was the smell of the impurities being burned off. The little Sermon doesn't mention that.

The processes involved in Glass-making, Silver Refining, and Even Textile Dying involve some nasty processes and chemicals, but the end results are so lovely that it is worth it.
