[Catholic Caucus] Leo XIV appoints a đ Jesuit - who defended homosexual "marriage" already in 2008 (!)
Today, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Jesuit Fr. Giacomo Costa and Salesian Sr. Elena Massimi as undersecretaries of the General Secretariat of the Synod for five-year terms.
Costa replaces Spanish Augustinian Archbishop Luis MarĂn de San MartĂn, appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Charity in March.
Sister Massimi succeeds French Sr. Nathalie Becquart, who had served as undersecretary since February 2021. Cardinal Mario Grech remains Secretary General.
Costa defended homosexual âmarriagesâ
Fr. Giacomo Costa SJ's involvement in debates over the homosexual civil unions dates back to at least 2008. He was one of seven members of the bioethics study group credited with a June 2008 article in the Jesuit journal Aggiornamenti Sociali, titled âRecognizing Same-Sex Unions? A Contribution to the Discussionâ. Costa was then managing editor of the journal.
The study argued that legal recognition of homosex relationships could be justified by Catholic politicians and contribute to the common good.
According to Gionata.org, Costa said: âIn the absence of alternatives, the marriage model, even understood in the limited sense of âpublic recognition of an affective relationship,â remains a legal as well as symbolic reference point for same-sex couplesâŚâ
âTalk about sexuality without taboosâ
Costa subsequently served as special secretary of Pope Francis's 2018 Synod on Young People and the 2021â2024 Synod on Synodality.
In a 2018 interview with Il Regno, Costa identified gender, sexuality and relationships as important areas for reflection, stating that many Church positions were perceived as âabstract, disconnected from concrete experience, preconceived or authoritarian.â
In a September 2018 interview with Vatican News, Costa similarly recalled young people's demand for open discussion of sexuality: âWe want to talk about it without taboos.â
During an October 2022 presentation of the Synod's continental-stage document, Costa identified women's participation in ecclesiastical decision-making and their âaccess to structures of governanceâ as matters requiring attention.
At a Vatican press conference on October 27, 2022, Costa drew attention to Catholics who felt excluded from the Church, mentioning homosexuals alongside Catholics of the Roman rite: âMany feel exiled within the Church: from those who would like to celebrate Mass according to the preconciliar rite to homosexuals,â he said.
In September 2023, Costa participated in a conference in Catania titled The Challenges of Love: Affection, Sexuality and Discernment. The gathering was organized by the Italian Christian Life Community (CVX), a Jesuit-associated pro-homosexual group.
The conference addressed Catholic teaching on sexuality, homosexual Catholics, and irregular relationships.
Sister Massimi praised Traditionis Custodes
The second undersecretary is Sister Elena Massimi, a professor of liturgy and president of the Italian Association of Professors of Liturgy.
She publicly praised Francis's Traditionis Custodes. According to her Salesian congregation, Massimi addressed Francis on September 1, 2022, thanking him for several liturgical documents, including Traditionis Custodes, which is âthe safe path to follow.â
Against male-only liturgical practices
In a May 2024 interview with la Repubblica, she questioned the exclusion of women from certain church choirs, including those of the Sistine Chapel and Milan Cathedral. âAre we sure that all of this is harmless?â she asked.
That same month, in L'Osservatore Romano, Massimi criticized the exclusion of girls from altar service: âWhat image of the Church is manifested in the liturgy when there are only altar boys in the sanctuary?â she asked, describing instances of exclusion as âvisible pockets of marginalization.â
In September 2024, Massimi addressed female deacons in L'Osservatore Romano. Her article, Diacone, una storia molte incertezze, examined historical deaconesses and whether their ministry constituted sacramental ordination. She cited Synod documents calling for further study of women's access to the diaconate, although she did not explicitly endorse sacramental ordination of female deacons.
In the same article, Massimi argued that institutional reform had failed to keep pace with the liturgical changes following Vatican II.: âToday, sixty years later, we can observe that the reform of the liturgy has not been matched by a reform of the Church,â she wrote.
In March 2026, Massimi again addressed women's liturgical participation in Liturgia al femminile, discussing their historical exclusion from church choirs, Francis's opening of the instituted ministries of lector and acolyte to women, and changes to liturgical language.
She concluded: âThe dissatisfaction is not so much with the liturgy itself, but with a Church that, despite the significant progress made, still struggles (just as society is) to recognize the gift represented by women.â
Longstanding collaboration with Andrea Grillo
Massimi has longstanding professional ties to Italian liturgical theologian Andrea Grillo, a sworn enemy of the traditional liturgy who favours female ordination.
In 2018, Massimi and Grillo jointly edited Donne e uomini: il servizio nella liturgia (Women and Men: Service in the Liturgy), examining the roles of men and women in Catholic worship.
Their jointly authored introduction called for âa profound and structural rethinking of forms of ministryâ and âa rereading of traditionâ in light of the equal dignity of men and women.
Both served on the governing council of the Italian Association of Professors of Liturgy as early as 2014.
Their collaboration extended to Rivista Liturgica. Its 2022 masthead lists Massimi as deputy editor and Grillo on the editorial board.

For certain anti-Catholic fundamentalists or internet agitators, adopting the vocabulary of radical traditionalism (e.g., calling post-conciliar Catholicism âapostasy,â citing obscure sedevacantist sites, constantly highlighting scandals) is far more effective than attacking Catholicism from the outside.
An outsider attacking the Papacy is easily ignored by Catholics. But an interlocutor posing as an âultra-orthodoxâ insider claiming the Papacy is fundamentally corrupt creates confusion, doubt, and demoralization among believers.
Genuine Catholic traditionalistsâeven those highly critical of current Vatican policiesâare typically deeply invested in Catholic spiritual life, scholastic theology, prayer, and the Sacraments.
If a posterâs activity activity is 100% focused on link-dumping, outrage-mongering, and political hit pieces, well...
As Scripture notes, âBy their fruits you will know themâ (Matthew 7:16). One whose entire presence consists of spreading anger, unverified gossip, and hostility toward Christâs Church reveals their spirit regardless of the label they claim.

Ebb tide,
Platforms like Gloria.tv thrive on perpetual motion. If one conspiracy or complaint runs out of steam, they immediately pivot to parsing past administrative decisions or op-ed pieces to keep the narrative of a “broken church” alive
Posting endless links from fringe sites to feed a continuous outrage cycle is a substitute for actual theological study.

Here he goes again: attacking the source with no supporting supporting evidence for the unwarranted attack.
The lying lobos has repeatedly claimed that, "Whenever I see an article posted by ebb tide, I look at the source and cross check the claims fir truth and accuracy. In 100% of the articles I looked at, they were at best half truths, and quite a few lies."
But he's all talk, full of lies, not once has he given proof of the "half-truths" or "lies".
Let's seem him do it here.

Ebb tide, posting a single article about the Rosary after years of posting unverified claims about billion-dollar bribes, sensationalist headlines, and anti-Vatican blog links doesn’t fool anyone.
Similarly if people point out the 100% focus on link dumping, calling them “lying lobos” isn’t an argument.
Each time you post an article with an unverified claim, whether claiming the CEI endorsed Islamic theology or repeating rumors of CCP bribes, Catholics provide verified context, canonical facts, and official church documents.
Fact-checking the sensationalist and fakse claims in the articles or blog posts you link is not “lying”; it is separating truth from internet outrage.
