Gary Sinise may be known for movies like Forrest Gump, The Green Mile and Of Mice and Men, but in recent years, he's dedicated himself to a life of philanthropy beyond the entertainment industry. In 2011, the actor founded the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports and provides services for U.S. veterans, first responders and military personnel.
At home, however, Sinise, 71, and his family faced their own unimaginable challenge. Sinise's son, Mac, a musician and composer, was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare form of cancer, at age 27. Mac died on Jan. 5, 2024 at age 33.
In Sinise's upcoming book, Graceful Warrior: The True Story of a Son, a Father, and a Family Who Carried Each Other Through, the actor pays tribute to Mac's story and his family's journey with grief and resilience.
“I felt like I was a bit of a battle buddy during this difficult time, trying to find as much strength and courage myself, as I saw that so much in our son,” Sinise explains of writing Graceful Warrior. “So I really believe that, by sharing our story in this book, others who may be going through something difficult in their own lives may find hope and strength to help carry them through.”
Sinise is also the author of the bestselling 2019 memoir Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service.

Music and faith were deeply intertwined in Mac’s life. Pictured here are two things he returned to again and again: his Bible and his composition journal.
In one, he wrestled with his faith, sought God’s guidance, and found strength for the road ahead. In the other, he filled pages with ideas, letting his thoughts pour out of him even through some of his most difficult days. On Resurrection & Revival: Part Three, there’s even a song about his back and forth with his journal, his diary, called Sleepy Song, as the diary implores him to, “Let your thoughts pour out, they’ll disappear into the dark.” Enjoy this song written by Mac and John Ondrasik and performed by John. https://youtube.com/watch?v=rdv65f9oG10
And there are so many passages underlined in his Bible, it’s like he’s sending messages.
Looking through these now, I’m struck by how often those two parts of Mac’s life seemed to meet. His faith gave him strength to keep moving forward, and his music gave him a way to express so much of what was inside him.
As I wrote Graceful Warrior, I found myself returning to these pages often. They helped me understand even more deeply what was in Mac’s heart during those years, and I’m grateful to still have these pieces of him, written in his own hand.
Thank you for sharing this. I’ve always liked Gary Sinese. I had no idea his family had gone through the loss of his son.
