Cardinal Blase Cupich is honoring Michael J. Sacks, a major abortion funder, in Chicago next week.
Sacks is receiving the Nostra Aetate award from the Archdiocese of Chicago despite his publicized, direct financial support of abortion. An announcement from Mundelein Seminary, published by the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, lists Sacks as a recipient of this year’s award from the archdiocese.
“Join His Eminence Blase Cardinal Cupich and Very Rev. John Kartje on Thursday, October 29, at IBEW Local 134 in Chicago for an inspiring evening supporting the formation of our future parish priests,” the university stated in a Facebook post announcement.
Sacks, a billionaire, was named in a Chicago Business article for donating $600,000 toward “shoring up Illinois’ abortion access infrastructure” in order to “offset federal cuts to reproductive health funding.”
The “philanthropist” and GCM Grosvenor CEO traveled to Rome in 2016 as part of an 80-member delegation accompanying then-Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel for Cupich’s elevation to cardinal.
Sacks is well-established in the Chicago Democratic Party scene. He served as a board member of the Obama Foundation since its launch and together with his wife in 2012 raised more than $200,000 for President Barack Obama’s reelection. Sacks also was chairman of the 2024 Democratic National Convention and was on Emanuel’s Economic Council from 2011 to 2019.
