Psalm 14

For the director of music. Of David.

1  The fool[a] says in his heart,
    “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
    there is no one who does good.

2  The Lord looks down from heaven
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
    any who seek God.

3  All have turned away, all have become corrupt;
    there is no one who does good,
    not even one.

4  Do all these evildoers know nothing?
They devour my people as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.

5  But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.

6  You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.

7  Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When the Lord restores his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Huzzah! I got this tip-pot computer to work again! I have no idea how long this fix will last, so be prepared for moments, hours, or days of silence from me. I will endeavor to stay in touch by cell phone, but I do the Daily Thread in HTML. Coding the Thread is a big part of my morning, sort of a meditation for me as I attempt to interpret the Word of God. Coding slows me down, and I'm able to correct and adjust things as I go along to make a nice presentation for you all.

This morning, when I booted up, there was a cascade of browser windows clogging things up...everything I had posted or looked up in the last few days. I think that was from the frustrated attempts (both mine and two techs at the Apple store) yesterday to get this thing to work...We kept pressing buttons and nothing was happening. Then it all piled up and happened all at the same time. YIKES!

Life is like that sometimes...we keep trying the same "fixes", hoping they will solve the problem, but they just pile up and make things worse. When we look at David's Personality, we see him attempt to solve his problems exactly like this. One sin leads to another, especially in his dealings with Bathsheba. The sequence was like this:

Desire, Lust, Adultery, Deception, Conspiracy, Betrayal, Murder.

David could have nipped this in the bud, if he had just averted his eyes and said a prayer and GOT OFF THAT ROOF. But, I digress a bit. We all have agreed at one time or another that the Coverup is sometimes worse than the Crime itself.

David speaks of a "Fool" in this Psalm. This isn't someone who has a low IQ or suffers from a cognitive deficit. The "Fool" in this case is the willfully ignorant and morally deficient individual who thinks he or she can do anything he or she wants and get away with it. The lack of moral clarity comes from the fool's assertion that "There is no God", and therefore no moral absolutes.

They pile up excuses, rationalizations, and theories to exonerate themselves.

The tragedy is when others, who also don't believe in moral absolutes, support and encourage evil.

And that's EXTREMELY "foolish", in the Biblical sense.
