1  Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
    in the heavens.

2  Through the praise of children and infants
    you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
    to silence the foe and the avenger.

3  When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
    which you have set in place,

4  what is mankind that you are mindful of them,

Right now, I'm reading a posthumous Novel written and researched by Michael Crichton, and "finished up" by James Patterson. These are two extraordinary authors, and this "collaboration" is a fun, exciting book. It takes place on the Big Island of Hawaii, a place where I've had a number of life-changing experiences. The descriptions in the book are perfectly accurate, down to the names of the Helicopter Companies, Streets, Hospitals, Beaches, and Parks.

Although I have no idea which author wrote what, it has redeemed Patterson in my estimation. I haven't read a book by him since I dumped one in the first chapter because he had a villain hiding in a basement in SOUTH FLORIDA. Houses in Florida are built on a coral ridge covering a aquifer. As nice as a house may be, it's unlikely to have a basement worth hiding in. Anyway, the novel is about the Moana Loa Volcano gearing up for "The Big One". The Vulcanologists, Army Corps of Engineers, Civil Defense,and the Media are all involved. The stakes are enormous, and the task insurmountable. Remember, the Volcanoes on the Big Island are a tiny speck in the middle of the largest ocean on the planet. And yet, the characters in the novel are overcome with AWE.

In Today's Psalm, we see more of David's Personality than some of the others. His sense of Wonder and Awe at the Earth, the Mountains, the Seas, the Stars, and the Entire Universe, are expressed with Fear and Reverence for The One True God. Now we have Space Telescopes that give us an even sharper view. There was another, more advanced one launched yesterday, but I'm still in awe of the pictures taken by the humble Hubble way back when. Here's something I wrote about the Hubble and Psalm 8, many years ago:

I am on a number of ping lists here on FR. One of my favorites is: "Astronomy Picture of the Day". I especially love the pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope. For years, we have been receiving magnificent pictures of star clusters, galaxies, nebulae, and other unimaginably huge and awesome things from beyond our home planet.

The pictures weren't always so crystal-clear. A tiny flaw in the curvature of the mirror caused the initial transmissions to be disappointing. A crew of astronauts went to the satellite and corrected the fault, and now we have these wonderful daily pictures.

The Universe was never blurry. The fault was in the "Vision" of the telescope. If someone hadn't risked his life to correct the Vision Problem, the Hubble would have ended up just being another piece of "space junk".

When David gazed at the sky, he was able to see beyond the stars and perceive their Creator. Those who look at the sky and only see stars are like the flawed mirror. In fact, St. Paul uses this same analogy in his letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 13) when he says that we see things "Through a glass darkly". Now, we see in part, but there will be a time when we see God face-to-face.
