For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

1  Answer me when I call to you,
    my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
    have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

2  How long will you people turn my glory into shame?
    How long will you love delusions and seek false gods[b]?[c]

3  Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself;
    the Lord hears when I call to him.

4  Tremble and[d] do not sin;
    when you are on your beds,
    search your hearts and be silent.

5  Offer the sacrifices of the righteous
    and trust in the Lord.

6  Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”
    Let the light of your face shine on us.

7  Fill my heart with joy
    when their grain and new wine abound.

8  In peace I will lie down and sleep,
    for you alone, Lord,
    make me dwell in safety.

May Dolly Parton Rest in Peace. She came up from poverty to become a Singer/Songwriter, Actress, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist. She was also an irreplaceable icon of "Americana", and from all accounts, a Really Lovely person. I had never realized how much her passing would affect me. To quote another great Singer/Songwriter, Joni Mitchell:

"You don't know what you got till it's gone."

Now here's something interesting: The two aforementioned women were both famous for the same profession, yet the difference in their personalities couldn't be more vast. I sing more of Joni's songs and have more of her albums, but I felt a spiritual connection to Dolly that was absent with Joni. Let's just say I'm looking forward to meeting Dolly in Heaven and leave it at that!

This is a little thing I wrote in 2021 about a dog I had back in the 1990s. Remember, I've had SIX dogs over the years. They all had traits common to all canines, but they had six totally different personalities:

When I adopted Torey-The-Dog, I was told that she was "probably a Jack-Russell mix with some kind of spaniel, but who knows?" As she matured, it became obvious that she was a Border Collie. I never had her DNA tested, but Torey's intelligence was phenomenal. She was able to match pitches with me when I sang opera. I would teach her simple melodies, which she would howl, and I would HARMONIZE with her. She was scary-smart. She passed on in 2010, shortly after I started this Thread, so some of you may remember her.

I found Torey's ability to recognize pitches and intervals to be uncanny. She actually had some favorite Classical Melodies, such as "Farandole" by Georges Bizet, and the finale of "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff. If those particular songs were played on the stereo, she would drop whatever she was doing and run over to the speaker, cock her ear like Nipper the RCA Victor Dog, and listen till the piece was over. It wasn't till years later that I learned that Shepherds use this ability to train Border Collies to tend the sheep. There is one whistled melody to guard, one to gather, one to stop, one to move on, etc.

Torey didn't need any training to be a herder. She just KNEW. If we happened to approach a bunch of kids at a bus stop, Torey would allow the children to pet her and tickle her, while all the time she was herding them into a tight little group. The kids were being "shepherded" without them even realizing it!

It is thought by some dog-aficionados that Border Collies have the highest IQ of all the dog breeds. Could it be that they are blessed in this way because they have been the constant companion of shepherds for millennia and are models for the faithful servants of the One True Shepherd, Who will one day gather all of His People together?

My current dog, Tippy, is a Blue Heeler, which is a Cattle Dog. The name "Heeler" is derived from the fact that the breed nips the heels of cattle to keep them moving, unlike a shepherd, who leads the sheep. Tippy's personality is so different from Torey's. While Torey could be playful, Tippy is always on a mission. Torey loved music, while Tippy is indifferent to it. Both are what are called "Working Breeds", and both are herders. That's where the similarity ends.

In Today's Psalm we see an aspect of David's personality that is in sharp contrast to what we've been reading about him. Instead of the bloodthirsty warrior, we see a humble man who is totally dependent upon God for his Peace. Instead of a King, we see a servant. Instead of a shepherd, we see a lost lamb, crying out to his Shepherd for rescue and safety.

A quick look at the superscription (subtitle) says that this is for "The Director of Music". That means that this very private, personal Psalm was meant to be sung by the Choir, in public, for everybody to hear.

That's quite remarkable, when one's innermost communion with God is part of the Public Liturgy!
