Prominent Theologian William Lane Craig Faces Backlash After Questioning Core Christian Doctrine

A recent video clip featuring renowned Christian apologist and professor William Lane Craig has ignited controversy within the Christian community after he appeared to question fundamental language in the Nicene Creed. The clip shows Craig raising concerns about the ancient creed’s assertion that Jesus Christ is “eternally begotten of the Father” in His divine nature.

The Nicene Creed, established at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325 and expanded at the Council of Constantinople in AD 381, has served as a cornerstone of Christian orthodoxy for nearly seventeen centuries. Its formulation was crucial in defending the Church against Arianism and other heresies that denied the full divinity of Christ.

Craig frames his critique of eternal generation around three core dimensions: exegetical, historical/philosophical, and theological.

True deity, in Craig's view, implies ultimate self-existence (aseity, existing a se or from oneself). If the Son’s divine nature is generated or derived from the Father (existing ab alio—from another), then the Son lacks absolute self-existence.

Craig argues that even if theologians stress that eternal generation is an uncreated, necessary, and eternal act, it still introduces an objectionable ontological subordinationism. If the Father is the source/cause of the Son's deity, the Father has an attribute (being unbegotten/source) that the Son lacks, making the Son contingent on and functionally subordinate to the Father in his very being.

Craig contends that the doctrine lacks solid biblical backing.

Craig argues that biblical references to Jesus as the "Son" or "begotten" (e.g., Psalm 2:7, applied in Hebrews 1:5) do not refer to an eternal generation of divine essence within the inner life of God (the immanent Trinity), but rather to Christ’s Incarnation and resurrection (the economic Trinity).

Craig’s comments have drawn sharp criticism from theologians and apologists who view the creed as essential to maintaining biblical Christianity. The doctrine of eternal generation teaches that the Son has always existed in relation to the Father, neither created nor made, but eternally begotten—sharing fully in the divine nature while remaining distinct as the Second Person of the Trinity.

Critics argue that questioning this foundational doctrine undermines the careful theological work of the early Church Fathers who formulated these truths under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Nicene Creed has united Christians across denominational lines—Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant—for generations.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions in contemporary Christian theology between traditional formulations and modern philosophical frameworks. Many defenders of orthodox Christianity maintain that the ancient creeds provide essential guardrails that protect the faith from theological drift and preserve the gospel message.

Church history demonstrates that departures from creedal orthodoxy have often led to significant doctrinal error. The early councils carefully crafted their language to express biblical truth about Christ’s nature—fully God and fully man—in ways that excluded false teaching while remaining faithful to Scripture.

As this debate unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of holding fast to the faith once delivered to the saints. The Nicene Creed remains a vital confession for Christians seeking to maintain theological fidelity in an age of increasing doctrinal confusion.

The first that comes to mind with theologians discussing God is that He’s so far beyond our comprehension nobody can make definitive statements beyond what is given. I think of God as an entity that split itself into different compartmentalizations for different purposes. YMMV

1 John 5:7, “For there are three that bear record in Heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one”

I think the council of Nicaea was an important council for resolving the Arian controversy. However it was chaired by Pagan Emperor Constantine I who effectively captured Christianity (regulatory and Financial) as an apparatus of Rome. Additionally, no where in the Bible does it say you must confess the Nicaean creed to be saved. Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit were always with the Father from everlasting.

I tried to read this. It should be directed for the affected parents to be able to read

We learned in 2nd grade everything we needed to know. We learned straight from the Gospel. Very basic 2nd grade level concepts

It was reiterated by people around us

People ignore it for reasons of lifestyle choices, but they know it very well

They will have to make an account with God They know that

Leftists know you can form children into atheist, America hating, family despising people from before

That’s why they’re busy doing it

This diatribe is too much

This is an old controversy. The core issue is much the same as that of the filioque controversy which the Orthodox and Roman churches still argue over to this day. In this context much of the argument centers on the meaning and context of the word monogenēs in John 1.14. Its most common meaning is “unique” but is translated as “begotten” in the KJV and others. The argument over this has been going on since the early church father Origin. Personally, I lean toward Dr. Craig’s take here although I often disagree with him on theological and exegetical issues.

Honestly, this issue is an in-house debate among deeper thinking Christians.

I don’t think the message of the gospel is affected at all. When it comes to the nature of an Infinite Eternal God, theologians have been grasping at understanding His nature for ages.

As St. As Augustine famously wrote: “If you fully comprehend it, it is not God.”

Recognizing the limits of human reason creates theological humility. When dealing with the inner mechanics of the Trinity—whether the Son’s relation to the Father is best described as an eternal derivation of essence or as an uncaused, co-equal personal distinction—we are staring into a mystery that human language can only approximate.

There is a parallel here with the Christian understanding of Christ’s Second Coming, AKA Eschatology.

In eschatology, Christians can disagree sharply over the timeline and events of Revelation without accusing one another of denying Christ’s return.

By applying that same logic here, Craig is not denying that the Son is God, nor that God is a Trinity. He is attempting to explain how the three Persons relate without running into what he sees as logical contradictions (like ontological subordination).

The debate really comes down to where different Christian traditions draw the circle around what is “essential.” and “non-essential”.

Your comments, the article, and Craig's X video comments are all a bit different, so they all need to be read/seen.

In his video, Craig says very clearly: "I do not believe or confess that the Son is eternally begotten from the Father in his divine nature and I think in so saying, I am being faithful to the New Testament."

As such, he is re-stating the heresy of Arianism. It's possible this clip is taken out of context. I don't know. I have not studied William Lane Craig.

But assuming this is the full context of his beliefs, Craig's insistence that only the words of the New Testament are relevant to this leads us to the same issue faced by the early Church. The New Testament does not speak on many things - does Alien life exist? Should we keep dogs as pets? How exactly does Mary, the Mother of Christ intercede for our behalf, if at all? etc. etc.

The same issue the early Church fathers face - if Christ is not eternally begotten of the Father, then it opens the door to all kinds of interpretations. So WHO then was Jesus Christ exactly? If he's not ontologically equal to God the Father, then maybe Christ was just a prophet, like Moses or Elijah. Maybe he was just a really well-educated guru who God smiled upon? That means the Trinity doesn't exist, and that means Christianity is something very different from what we today think.

You can see the issues the Council of Nicea faced. Craig is simply re-raising them here.

Brilliantly stated. We cannot describe that which is beyond our experience and our ability ever to experience. It is beyond our full comprehension. That’s why whenever someone tries to create a comparison or illustration for the Trinity it devolves into heresy when picked at enough. One may want to look up Immanuel Kant’s concept of antinomies which describes this phenomenon quite well. Reason breaks down when dealing with the transcendent.

Exactly. Lane fears that this take on these words from the traditional Creed will lead to subordination or modalism. And I think it’s a legitimate concern.

“ As such, he is re-stating the heresy of Arianism.”

No he’s not. He confesses the complete deity of Christ which the Arians denied. He is saying the divine essence of Christ was not eternally begotten (ie. derived from) the Father. That would make him subordinate to the Father or just another face on the one Father (modalism). This is actually farther from Arianism than the opposing view.
