Psalm 3[a]

A psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.

1  Lord, how many are my foes!
    How many rise up against me!

2  Many are saying of me,
    “God will not deliver him.”[b]

3  But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
    my glory, the One who lifts my head high.

4  I call out to the Lord,
    and he answers me from his holy mountain.

5  I lie down and sleep;
    I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

6  I will not fear though tens of thousands
    assail me on every side.

7  Arise, Lord!
    Deliver me, my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
    break the teeth of the wicked.

8  From the Lord comes deliverance.
    May your blessing be on your people.

Today's story is apocryphal, and and gathered from a number of Senior Citizens who are now deceased, so I have no way of checking if it's true or based upon legend and rumor.

According to the story, Irving Berlin, an Immigrant who became "America's Songwriter" married the Love of his Life, Ellin, on January 4th, 1926. Reportedly, he wrote the song "Always" for her as a Wedding Gift. It's a beautiful song, and has been recorded by many prominent artists in its 100 years. That part we know to be true. The next is speculation.

Irving and Ellin went to South America on their Honeymoon, where she was bitten by a tropical insect and got sick and DIED. Irving was so crushed by this tragedy, that all he could write for a long time were sad songs. ("What'll I Do?")

Remember, this was from collected memories of very old people, over 60 years later, but Irving DID have a period of very sad songs following Ellin's death early in their marriage.

Listening to Irving Berlin's songs is like hearing a microcosm of American History. The crazy optimism of the early pre-WW1 years, (Alexander's Ragtime Band), The joy of his first love during the Roaring Twenties, (Always), the Depression (What'll I Do?), and then...the "Storm Clouds began to gather far across the sea", and Irving Berlin wrote "God Bless America". It was premiered by Kate Smith on her Radio Show on November 10th, 1938. Less than a year later, Hitler invaded Poland and WW2 officially began.

When I entertained Seniors back in the 1980s and 90s, I always closed with "God Bless America". Everybody sang along, as it had meant so much in these people's lives.

Psalm 3 is one of 13 Psalms that include an autobiographical note, placed by the Composer himself. This is called the superscription of the Psalm, and, in Hebrew Bibles is actually considered part of the Psalm itself. That's why the Verse Numbers don't always line up with the original Hebrew, because the Superscription has become "Verse 1".

Just as Irving Berlin's songs tell both his own life story as well as the History of his country unfolding around him, so do the Psalms of David. They tell us more about his Personality than any Psychoanalyst could ever do!
