1  Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,

2  but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and who meditates on his law day and night.

3  That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
    which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

4  Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.

5  Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

A private message about yesterday's Scripture Portion expressed something I had unconsciously avoided about David's personality. It was about a single phrase buried in the narrative that I had either missed or avoided, concerning David "hamstringing the horses" of his enemy. That's nasty and cruel. I LOVE horses.

I responded that In modern warfare, we disable all their vehicles, blow up their tanks and airplanes, etc, but the Philistines’ “Vehicles” had hearts and living souls.

Even though that's how they "did warfare" back in those days, it still bothers me. Cruelty in general bothers me, and War is very cruel. Every verse shows us another side of David. He was a very complex individual.

One can often discern a Songwriter's personality from his lyrics. The cynical irony of a Cole Porter lyric can be dissected to reveal, perhaps, his struggles with his own sexuality. Billy Joel's lyrics show a world-weariness that approaches bitterness. Ozzie's lyrics reveal a frustration with Cold War politics and growing up under the shadow of possible Nuclear Annihilation. Sting, who was also a Professor of Classical English Literature, fills his lyrics with references to Chaucer and Shakespeare. Led Zeppelin's lyrics carry many references to 19th Century Mysticism, and so on. What some people hear as noise, others hear as personal confessions. And we see David's Personality in every one of his Psalms.

The word "Psalms" isn't Hebrew, but Greek, and comes from The Septuagint. It's actually from the name of a portable stringed instrument that we call David's Harp, but is more like a Lyre than a Concert Harp. (Somebody should have told all those Renaissance painters!). Due to it's portability, it was more like a "backpack guitar" than a harp as we know it.

Psalm 1 illustrates two features of Hebrew Poetry, one of contrast, and that of a chiasm. (This is a literary structure that goes one way, and then returns. We'll examine that more in the days to come).

Psalm 1 talks about the blessings that follow a person who delights in God, and the misery of those who don't. It's a simple chiasm: "Love God, and you will be blessed, Don't love God, and you will perish."

I once found an antique book that was "Metered Psalms". These were the Psalms set to a singable meter, and was published by The Church of Scotland back in the 19th Century. It was in great shape, and looked as if nobody had ever used it.

The Psalms were written in Hebrew, and so they had a different meter than songs in English. I would LOVE to know what the melodies were like!

Amen to your prayer and interesting word. Certainly musical lyrics have an effect on shaping the thoughts of others, good and bad. The tune will have drive it deeper into memory. So we have to be careful what we fill are hearts with cuz it could be hard to get it out. Once upon a time music was rare. Long periods of quiet and times of sharing that have disappeared.
