David Anointed King Over Judah

2 In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.

The Lord said, “Go up.”

David asked, “Where shall I go?”

“To Hebron,” the Lord answered.

2 So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 3 David also took the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in Hebron and its towns. 4 Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the tribe of Judah.

When David was told that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead who had buried Saul, 5 he sent messengers to them to say to them, “The Lord bless you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him. 6 May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this. 7 Now then, be strong and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king over them.”

Just yesterday, I posted this little personal story to some of my friends, and I'd like to share it with you too! It's about how, even when riding solo on a lonely country road, I'm NOT alone:

The roads to Cape Cod (53, 3A, 28, 105, and 58) have all been bypassed by the glorious Interstate Highways (Rt 3, 495, and 195), leaving the older routes uncongested, tree-shaded, and rural. I choose to ride these older routes, with my wheels never touching the highway, and I'm rewarded by fields of ripening corn, Cranberry Bogs (lots of those!), 300-Year-Old Cemeteries, Little White Steepled Churches, and causeways with lakes on either side of the road (Monponsett and Lakeville). It takes about four hours to go down to the cape one way and return by another. Since most people going to Cape Cod want to actually GET to where they're going, everybody takes the Highways, which leaves the scenic route to the bikers and the people who actually LIVE in these little towns.

Anyway, I had a lovely trip the full length of Rt 58, and turned South on Rt 28 heading towards Onset Beach when traffic suddenly backed up. Up ahead were blue lights indicating a Police car, and as I got closer, could see that there had been a terrible car accident that was blocking the street. A police officer walked over to the line of cars and informed us that we would have to “Bang a Yooie” (Bostonese for a U-Turn) and take an alternate route. I began to turn the bike, but something (or Some ONE) told me to just sit tight.

The woman in front of me pulled out just as the woman behind me did. The woman in front banged the yooie, and smashed right into the woman in back, nose-to-nose. If I had ventured out in that moment, I would have been squashed like a bug between them.

I figured this was a good time to get gas, and get off the road. I went into the adjacent gas station, filled up, and went inside to use the facilities.

When I came out, the Police Officer was coming in the door.

“Oh No!” I thought. “He's going to make me give a statement. After all, I witnessed the whole thing. I really didn't want to have my day further ruined."

The officer went to the clerk, and got a cup of coffee. I smiled at him and said:

“It's ALWAYS an ADVENTURE, Isn't it?”

The Officer laughed, I got on my bike, and continued my journey.

In life, we are often called upon to "Bang a Yooie" in the middle of nowhere. David had no idea that, while a teenager guarding his father's sheep, an elderly Prophet of God would show up and pour olive oil on his head. It hadn't occurred to him that, while bringing some provisions to his older brothers in the Army, he would end up fighting, killing, and beheading a giant. Do you think he's ever thought that he would marry a king's daughter, or have a spear thrown at him while singing one of his songs? Who could have imagined forty years of being on the run, chased by a maniac who he was forbidden by God to kill?

Now he was having oil poured on his head again, and his first act as King of Judah is to officially Thank the people who had given a decent burial to his enemy Saul.

If that isn't "banging a Yooie", I don't know what else it could be!

By the way, the Hebrew word for “Repent” is “Teshuvah” which, basically means “Make a U-Turn”! :-)
