2 Samuel 1:1-16
David Hears of Saulâs Death
1Â After the death of Saul, David returned from striking down the Amalekites and stayed in Ziklag two days. 2Â On the third day a man arrived from Saulâs camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him honor.
3Â âWhere have you come from?â David asked him.
He answered, âI have escaped from the Israelite camp.â
4Â âWhat happened?â David asked. âTell me.â
âThe men fled from the battle,â he replied. âMany of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.â
5Â Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, âHow do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?â
6Â âI happened to be on Mount Gilboa,â the young man said, âand there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit. 7Â When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, âWhat can I do?â
8Â âHe asked me, âWho are you?â
ââAn Amalekite,â I answered.
9Â âThen he said to me, âStand here by me and kill me! Iâm in the throes of death, but Iâm still alive.â
10Â âSo I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.â
11Â Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them. 12Â They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13Â David said to the young man who brought him the report, âWhere are you from?â
âI am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,â he answered.
14Â David asked him, âWhy werenât you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lordâs anointed?â
15Â Then David called one of his men and said, âGo, strike him down!â So he struck him down, and he died. 16Â For David had said to him, âYour blood be on your own head. Your own mouth testified against you when you said, âI killed the Lordâs anointed.ââ

If this were a sermon, I would title it:
"The Perils of Puffery".
"Puffery" is a term used in politics and commerce, and, while not exactly lying, is making something look bigger and better than it really is. Here's an imaginary ad I concocted that contains a lot of puffery regarding a piece of Real Estate:

That bit of "Puffery" was advertising an OUTHOUSE. It wasn't a lie, but it sure wasn't TRUE.
If the Amalakite hadn't engaged in "puffery" when informing David of the death of Saul, he probably would have been rewarded for returning Saul's crown and weapons. Instead, he miscalculated David's reaction, and, wanting to seem like the Big Hero of the Day, said that HE was the one who killed Saul and Jonathan.
Bad Move.

Psalm 91
1 You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,*
2 will say to the Lord, âMy refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.â
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
or the arrow that flies by day,
6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
or the destruction that wastes at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge,*
the Most High your dwelling-place,
10 no evil shall befall you,
no scourge come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder,
the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.
14 Those who love me, I will deliver;
I will protect those who know my name.
15 When they call to me, I will answer them;
I will be with them in trouble,
I will rescue them and honour them.
16 With long life I will satisfy them,
and show them my salvation.
