David Saves Keilah

23 When David was told, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing floors,” 2 he inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.”

3 But David’s men said to him, “Here in Judah we are afraid. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!”

4 Once again David inquired of the Lord, and the Lord answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.” 5 So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines and carried off their livestock. He inflicted heavy losses on the Philistines and saved the people of Keilah. 6 (Now Abiathar son of Ahimelek had brought the ephod down with him when he fled to David at Keilah.)

Every week, my two little brothers and I stopped everything and watched "Then Came Bronson"

The main character rode around the American Southwest on his motorcycle, righting wrongs and "fixing" situations. This type of wandering hero, disillusioned by society and "on the run", was later reprised in another series, "Renegade".

This ancient theme is a favorite of screenwriters, and the wandering, falsely-accused hero shows up on foot (King Fu), on a horse ("Branded", "The Lone Ranger"), or even a time-machine "Quantum Leap". My two favorites were, of course, the ones who showed up on motorcycles.

David, while on the run from Saul, ends up having adventures along the way. In today's reading, he actually saves an entire city.

If anyone asks you if there were any motorcycles in the Bible, you can tell them that David roared his Triumph into Keiliah, along with Harley, David's son. (ducking!)
