Personalities
1 Samuel 15:1-
The Lord Rejects Saul as King
15Â Samuel said to Saul, âI am the one the Lord sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord. 2Â This is what the Lord Almighty says: âI will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3Â Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.ââ
4Â So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaimâtwo hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand from Judah. 5Â Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine. 6Â Then he said to the Kenites, âGo away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.â So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.
7Â Then Saul attacked the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt. 8Â He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword. 9Â But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves[b] and lambsâeverything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.
10Â Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11Â âI regret that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions.â Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the Lord all that night.
12Â Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, âSaul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.â
13Â When Samuel reached him, Saul said, âThe Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lordâs instructions.â
14Â But Samuel said, âWhat then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?â
15Â Saul answered, âThe soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.â
16Â âEnough!â Samuel said to Saul. âLet me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.â
âTell me,â Saul replied.
17Â Samuel said, âAlthough you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18Â And he sent you on a mission, saying, âGo and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.â 19Â Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?â
20Â âBut I did obey the Lord,â Saul said. âI went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21Â The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.â
22Â But Samuel replied:
âDoes the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
â¨Â    as much as in obeying the Lord?
â¨To obey is better than sacrifice,
â¨Â    and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23Â For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
â¨Â    and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
â¨Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
â¨Â    he has rejected you as king.â
24Â Then Saul said to Samuel, âI have sinned. I violated the Lordâs command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them. 25Â Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.â
26Â But Samuel said to him, âI will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!â
27Â As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore. 28Â Samuel said to him, âThe Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighborsâto one better than you. 29Â He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.â
30Â Saul replied, âI have sinned. But please honor me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.â 31Â So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32Â Then Samuel said, âBring me Agag king of the Amalekites.â
Agag came to him in chains.[c] And he thought, âSurely the bitterness of death is past.â
33Â But Samuel said,
âAs your sword has made women childless,
â¨Â    so will your mother be childless among women.â
And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
34Â Then Samuel left for Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul. 35Â Until the day Samuel died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned for him. And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.

A few weeks ago, I shared the story of a group of a dozen Scottish Soccer fans who showed up at Open Mike Nite. Our Host, who oddly enough is named "Scotty", was equipped to let our Scottish Guests do karaoke. One of the lads did a stirring rendition of "My Way", complete with a thick Scottish burr (accent). It was delightful and hilarious at the same time.
However, what works with a Frank Sinatra song doesn't work when dealing with the Creator of the Universe.
It may seem unrelated, but I'm reminded of a discussion Jesus had with the Pharisees, recorded in Mark 7. The Pharisees challenge Jesus because He and His Disciples weren't doing a traditional hand-washing ritual before eating. Jesus' reply is devastating:
6 He replied, âIsaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
ââThese people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.â[b]
8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.â
9 And he continued, âYou have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[c] your own traditions! 10 For Moses said, âHonor your father and mother,â[d] and, âAnyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.â[e] 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)â 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.â
14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, âListen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.â [16] [f]
What Jesus was saying was that the Pharisees wanted to do it My Way" instead of "God's Way".
Saul was doing the same thing. God gave him a command: "Destroy Everything". Why He gave this command had implications that would show up centuries later, in the Book of Esther (the wicked villain Haman was a descendant of Agag). God sees the beginning from the End, and the End from the Beginning, because He is Eternal.
Saul tried to give the same excuse as the Pharisees "I was saving these to give to God"
Both the passage in Mark and the Passage in 1 Samuel are disturbing, because we want to do things "My Way". It's Human nature. But, if one wants to do it "My Way", at least don't say that you're doing it for God.
It's "His Way" or...NO WAY!
