1 Samuel 5:1-

5 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.

2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.

7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.

9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.

10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.

11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

There's a very poignant line in Ozzie Osborn's "Crazy Train":

"Heirs of the Cold War, That's what we've become,
Inheriting troubles, I'm mentally numb."


Many people reading this can remember "Duck and Cover", Fallout Shelters, and Public Service Announcements on TV about "What To Do In The Case Of Nuclear Attack". Although I'm not a big fan of Ozzie's music, that line really resonated with me.

Since the Indiana Jones movies, there has been much speculation about the Ark of the Covenant. Was it some kind of battery? Was it Radioactive? Was it a Transmitter of Cosmic Rays? What happened to it? Is it still in the Holy Land? Is it in Ethiopia? Is it buried under Oak Island, Nova Scotia? Were the Templars involved? How about Space Aliens? Did Solomon and Sheba have a son named Melech who stole it? It provides material for dozens of movies and documentaries, and is very entertaining.

One thing we have learned from Scripture is that the Ark was dangerous. If one possessed it illegally, it was nothing but Trouble, but it was a Blessing to those to whom God had given authority to use it.

When the Philistines stole the Ark, they set it up in their own pagan temple. Their god Dagon looked like a merman, and was supposed to bless them as they made their living from the Sea. The Philistines parked the Ark next to the idol of Dagon, and that's when things got really ugly.

Not only did the statue of Dagon tip over and shatter, but the people were suddenly afflicted with a plague of mice (eyew!) and TUMORS. ("emerods" in the KJV).

How on earth could a mere piece of metal cause tumors? Check out this Wiki Article:

"Tickling The Dragon's Tail".

Unlike "The Demon Core", which would kill anybody who got too near, the Ark was harmless to those who were pure and innocent. Baby Samuel slept next to it every night for years, and never reported a single tumor. The Philistines, however, were stuck with a "Hot Potato" that they shifted about from town to town, giving tumors and mice to every community they visited. It was like living in Pripyat!

It seems like "Tickling the Dragon's Tail" is NOT a good idea, unless you have a personal, loving, relationship with the dragon.

“The Demon Core” That nuclear accident was portrayed in a good movie “Fat Man and Little Boy” 1989 starring Paul Newman. The scientist who made the fatal mistake was played by John Cusack.

Amen to your prayer and word. Dagon kinda sounds like dogon as in dogon it or dadgum it when something falls or doesn’t work out. Appropriate term for a false god.
