4 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.

2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.

3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's:

4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.

5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it.

7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.

8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.

9 And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.

10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:

12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman.

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son.

One of my favorite rides is a loop that includes Southeastern Massachusetts, through "Cranberry Country" and skirting the ocean near Buzzard's Bay. (Cape Cod is too crowded in the summer, so I wait till Autumn to cross the Canal). For years, on Route 105, I would pass by a venerable old mansion, with a Greek Revival facade (like Tara in Gone With The Wind) with a sign on the lawn:

FREE
HOUSE

There was also some fine print under that enticing headline, but, as I zipped by on the Harley, I couldn't read it.

Year after year, I would pass the "Free House", and watched it deteriorate. The weeds grew, the windows were broken, the porch caved in, and the siding started to fall off. It was so sad. Finally, I decided to deviate from my route and investigate. I swerved the bike up the weed-choked driveway and approached the sign. Here's what it said:

FREE
HOUSE

YOU HAVE TO MOVE IT

Behind the house was something that looked like an abandoned hospital: acres of broken glass, crumbling medical equipment, and God knows what else. I jumped on the bike and sped out of there. This summer I rode by again, and the house is gone. Either somebody moved it or it crumbled into dust. The abandoned hospital can now be seen from the street, and is featured on You Tube in a Ghost-Hunting Video.

Southeastern Massachusetts is full of spooky stories, and I may have just added another!

Boaz knew that he wasn't the exact "Next-Of-Kin" to marry Ruth and raise sons for Elimelech, but he was in love with her. He needed to take care of a few legal matters before he could marry her.

He met with the closer relative, in front of witnesses, and presented the land that Elimelech had left behind. It was like the "FREE HOUSE" sign, and the man was eager to acquire it. But then came the fine print on the bottom of the sign.

The closer relative may have had a wife and sons of his own, and raising a son for Elimelech would cause complicated family issues.

And so, Boaz made a deal, and sealed it in the fashion of the day, by exchanging a shoe.

Sometimes, this shoe-taking was seen as a gesture of contempt, but in this case, it was just "business". Boaz got his Bride, and some land in the bargain.

From this "deal" would come the Redemption of Israel, and, indeed, the Redemption of the Whole World.

Amen to your word and prayer. Naomi’s house was abandoned but Boaz could see the beauty still there, fortunate for both. I recently went to a youth retreat as a helper. It was in the middle of Eastern Oregon in a valley. It was near Antelope,I realized it was the town the Bahgwan cult took over. Their compond was this 10 square mile ranch we stayed at. The cult was expelled in the 80’s. So I thought bad juju, I have a friend that went there and participated, orgies and all. Now he is a Christian. The Washington family bought it and converted it into a large beautiful compond that Youth Ministries uses, a very big organization. Very resort like and extremely well maintained, even a little airport etc. So even places with bad juju can be rehabbed for God’s glory, eh.
