(TRUE CONFESSION TIME) I never was a big fan of soccer. First of all, it wasn't an American Game, and wasn't a part of my heritage or my childhood. As it became more popular, especially in the School System, it interfered with my teaching schedule and affected me financially.

When President Trump announced that he was going to try to get America to host the FIFA World Cup to coincide with America's 250th Birthday, I wasn't impressed. I imagined an influx of people who hate my country to play a game I'm not interested in, and clogging up Traffic and other services. I may have griped about it, maybe not. I realized I was in a very cranky minority, so I probably kept my mouth shut. Anyway, the exact opposite happened.

Large numbers of visitors came to America (mostly from Scotland) to follow their Teams across the Country. Everywhere they went, they were treated with joy and affection. In Boston, Scottish fans were treated to a Special Day at Fenway Park, Bagpipe Parades, and Parties in every Tavern for miles around the city. The City of Boston actually ran out of beer. I don't think that's ever happened before.

In Texas, visitors marveled at a Buck-ee's Gas Station as if it were an Adult Version of Disneyland. The variety, abundance, and friendliness of Americans was a revelation to most of our guests. What they had been told about us was proven to be bitter propaganda, and was belied by what they experienced visiting our country for the first time.

I have come to like soccer after all, and our guests have learned to love Ranch Salad Dressing. The sweetness, richness, and little bit of spice is a good analogy for what America turned out to be for them.

Ruth had probably heard a lot about the Israelites, and the Israelites had heard a lot about Moab. I imagine that accompanying Naomi back to Bethlehem must have been terrifying. She wasn't sure what to expect, and at first it seemed pretty grim, picking up leftover grain in some rich guy's field. Then Naomi gives her some very "sketchy" advice about lying down at a man's feet, on his property, at night, after he's had a lot to drink. Can you imagine?

Ruth, with her gentle, trusting personality, does as Naomi instructs. She will end up with a treasure far more valuable than a suitcase full of Ranch Dressing, as she spends that night in that Hidden Valley of Bethlehem.
