The Bible can be a dense book, especially when reading it cover-to-cover. Genesis is mostly narrative, with some genealogies that can bog readers down a bit, and is a "Good Read". It's a generational story that spans centuries, and has some great intrigue, romance, character development, cities being blown up, battles between neighbors, hostage rescues, and other great story-telling elements.

Exodus is awesome too, and starts with with a wicked king, genocide, heroic midwives, and the epic story of Moses. We stayed in Exodus for WEEKS!

Then, after Chapter 20 (The Ten Commandments), a lot of people "hit the wall". That's because the various laws and ordinances (called "Mitzvaot" in Hebrew) are listed, and there's 613 of them! Movies have been made about most of the heroes in Genesis, and Exodus up to Chapter 20, but I don't think anyone has attempted to dramatize the 613 Laws. Yet, just because they can't be dramatized, there is a lot of "DRAMA" that will come forth from them.

The Book of Ruth is a perfect example of this. The first sentence is careful to let everyone know that this story took place during the Time of the Judges. There was no Temple, no King, and no Police, and "everybody did what was right in their own eyes".

However, in Bethlehem in Judea, there seemed to be a traditional respect for certain Laws that were preserved in those difficult passages of the Torah. The first one was allowing the poor to glean the fields. The second one was a law about the "Next of Kin" providing for widows in a family. This was to insure that a man will have a son to carry on his name and property, should he die without children.

Ruth was the widow of a man whose brother had also died. Since she was also a foreigner, and so poor she was gleaning in the fields with the other widows. By coincidence (Ha!), she ended up in the field of her late husband's second-nearest kinsman (Boaz), who saw her gleaning and fell in love with her. (You know how I feel about "coincidences"!). Scripture hints that Boaz was an older man, and, possibly a widower himself, with no children of his own.

When he questions Ruth, her answer is so sweet and humble that he is even MORE in love!

He fills her apron with as much grain as she can carry, and cautions her to stay with his own servant girls for protection. Remember, these were lawless times, and there could be bad people out in the fields.

As the last line in a VERY romantic old movie once said:

"This Could Be The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship."
