🇺🇸Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem 🇮🇱(6/20/26)[Prayer]

Personalities

Ruth 1:1-18

1 Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

3 And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.

4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.

5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

6 Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread.

7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

8 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

9 The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

10 And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

11 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;

13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me.

14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.

15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.

16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.

When I was about eight years old, my Aunt Mary took me to the movies. The feature was a Hollywood Bible Epic called "The Story of Ruth".

The opening scene has a little girl, about my age, being chosen by the High Priest of Chemosh for a very special ceremony. She is thrilled, until the High Priest notices a bruise on her arm from where he had grasped her. He instantly rejects her as "blemished and unfit" and chooses the next little girl in line. Little Ruth is heartbroken because she has been rejected, UNTIL she sees what the High Priest of Chemosh had in mind. The ceremony that Ruth was rejected for turned out to be a Human Sacrifice to Chemosh, the Moabite "God". Because of a bruise, probably inflicted by the High Priest himself, Little Ruth's life was spared.

Two decades later, I was given my first Bible. I eagerly looked up the Book of Ruth (right after Judges) to read the story as I remembered it. There was nothing about the incident, the High Priest of Chemosh, or the Bruise that saved her life. It was all HOLLYWOOD! I'm going to give Tinseltown a pass on this one though, because there was human sacrifice in Canaan (usually associated with the false god Molech), and God considered it an Abomination. The Movie Scene also showed how one little factor (like a bruise on Ruth's tiny arm) can change everything, even the course of History. Ruth's survival meant so much to the World, as she ends up being the Great Grandmother of King David, and, hence, in the Line of Jesus The Messiah.

Today we are going to look at two women and their personalities, because they travel side-by-side throughout the story.

Naomi, whose name means "Cheerful", is an older woman who has experienced terrible loss. Not only is she a widow, but she has lost her two sons as well. Her only companions are her two widowed daughters-in-law, both of whom a pagan foreigners. She has nowhere to go but back to Bethlehem, where, perhaps some kinsman of her late husband will take pity on her. She is moody, pessimistic, and bitter, but, with good reasons.

The other woman is Ruth, the widow of one of Naomi's sons.

When Naomi urges both women to go back to their People (and pagan ways), one goes and the other stays. Ruth says words to Naomi which have been immortalized in Wedding Ceremonies and Songs:

Intreat me not to leave thee,
or to return from following after thee:
for whither thou goest, I will go;
and where thou lodgest, I will lodge:
thy people shall be my people,
and thy God my God:
Where thou diest, will I die,
and there will I be buried:
the Lord do so to me, and more also,
if ought but death part thee and me.

These are Words that changed History.

Psalm 91

1 You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,*
2 will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.’
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
or the arrow that flies by day,
6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
or the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge,*
the Most High your dwelling-place,
10 no evil shall befall you,
no scourge come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder,
the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.

14 Those who love me, I will deliver;
I will protect those who know my name.
15 When they call to me, I will answer them;
I will be with them in trouble,
I will rescue them and honour them.
