Last Night was so much fun! About a dozen Scottish Soccer Hooligans showed up at Open Mike Nite at my sister's and my usual Tuesday Night activity. The were the same group of somewhat rowdy men who arrived a few days ago at Logan Airport, resplendent in their kilts after totally exhausting the Jumbo Jet's supply of Food and Adult Beverages. They were following Scotland's Team across America, had a victory last weekend, and would soon be flying to Miami for the next FIFA round.

The whole evening was filled with boisterous cheering and singing, and the "lads" got up several times to sing Karaoke. One man said:

"I LOVE AMERICA! HAPPY 250th BIRTHDAY!"

All of the men were very "beefy", as they probably played soccer as well as cheered their team. They seem to grow 'em BIG up there in Edinburgh.

All the Bible illustrations show Samson with a similar physique. Big, beefy, and with rippling muscles, he's obviously the Strong Man.

It's been noted that Samson's actual strength didn't come from Working Out, Lifting Weights, or Bodybuilding. He knew where his strength came from, and yet continued to flout the Law of God.

In yesterday's Reading, we learned that Samson was a Judge for Twenty Years. That meant that he was in a position of Political and Religious Authority, and that people depended upon him for guidance and decisions. There was a certain amount of respect and gravitas associated with his Position, and yet, here he is, visiting a prostitute in an enemy city. He puts himself in danger, and responds to his attackers by ripping the City Gates off their hinges and carrying them to Hebron.

How many times have we read of someone in a position of authority getting caught in a compromising situation? It's very discouraging for the faithful who try to keep God's Law and live a decent life. We need to know in our hearts that, when these disappointments happen, that we are dealing with human beings. Some have been extremely gifted by God, but they're still only human.

Samson's reaction was one of hubris and defiance. But...God isn't finished with him yet.
