This detailed examination of Samson's Personality could make you wonder:

"Why oh Why would God grant so many gifts (Power, Strength, Virility, Authority, etc) to such a bombastic, rude, vulgar, vindictive, narcissistic oaf?"

If you ever saw the movie "Amadeus", you will remember that the same question tormented Solieri (a FICTIONAL account...they were actually FRIENDS). In the movie, Solieri was horrified at Mozart's goofy behavior (which included fart-jokes), and was jealous of the man's incredible talent. When we see God bless a person who doesn't deserve it, it sometimes can make us indignant. A first reading of the REAL story of Samson can elicit that kind of jealousy.

There are little moments when Samson realizes his dependence on God alone, not on his own strength and agility. He has just defeated 1000 Philistines with the jawbone of an ass, and now he's thirsty (who wouldn't be). He cries out to God with a not-very-humble prayer and God sends him water right through the jawbone. The water is more powerful than Samson, or even his weapon. Maybe this will be a turning point for Samson...or...maybe NOT.

Samson’s story is a reminder of the tragedy that can come upon us when we wander from God’s protection, when we become distracted or tempted, when He is not first.

Lord, let us not take our gifts and blessings for granted, but help us to always be thankful.

Lord, we lift up the persecuted Christians. We ask for mercy to be poured out upon their lives.
