26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.

27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name Over All The Earth!
We Worship and Bow Down Before You,
Oh Father,
For You and You Alone Are Worthy;
You Alone Are Holy;
You Alone Are The One True God.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.

In today's last visit with Gideon, we see a lot of his personality distilled into these final moments. He goes from a timid farmer threshing his grain in secret to being a legendary warrior with many wives, concubines, and children. He becomes one of the "Judges" who rule the Israelites during this dark time in their history when "Everybody did what was right in their own eyes." He also erected a monument that became an idol, although it may not have been his intent that it would work out that way.

In an action reminiscent of The Golden Calf Incident, Gideon has the people donate their gold jewelry to erect a statue commemorating the Victory over the Midianites. We see that Gideon is careful to have the statue be NOT a "god" or even a person, but merely an "Ephod", which was a garment worn by the High Priest in the Tabernacle. It was basically a gold statue of a free-standing "Apron". We can see that Gideon was trying to make a statue that wouldn't be an actual idol, but just an abstract representation of God. He thought he could do this without breaking the Commandment against Graven Images.

Nevertheless, the Golden Ephod became an idol. The very thing that Gideon wanted to avoid backfired against him and his family. Even though it was just a statue of an apron, it was enough to become what the Bible calls "a Snare".

Some things aren't against the Law, but are still a snare to people. It's even worse when people try to get right up to the edge of illegality, staying "legal" but still exposing themselves to temptation.

Gideon may have been a more effective Judge, if he had embraced The Spirit of the Law instead of the Letter.
