4 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the Lord said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

7 And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.

8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

Years ago, I saw a movie that was entirely Computer-Generated. While the idea was repugnant to me, an artist who could see my craft disappearing into a world of pixels, I gave it a pass because it was based on a "Graphic Novel". This is essentially a Comic Book that has been expanded to novel length, and, admittedly, has better artwork. The story was based on the Historic Battle of Thermopylae, where King Leonidas led his tiny army of 300 men against a vast Persian Invasion.

The movie was very entertaining, and people still post memes derived from it, but I couldn't get past the notion that computers would eventually usurp ALL of the Arts. In this new era of AI (Movies, Music, Art, Fake News, etc) my misgivings have proven to be prophetic. I guess I'm just an Old-Fashioned kinda gal.

As I said, the Graphic novel and the Movie titled "300" was based on a true story. Due to a narrow defile in the sea cliffs, King Leonidas' 300 men were able to delay the entire Persian Army of Thousands by defending the tight bottleneck between the cliffs. Historians may bicker about the actual facts and figures, but the Legend is based on something that DID happen. CGI gave all those 300 Spartans perfect physiques and bulging muscles, and had them do impossible moves, but it was all based upon reality.

Gideon was given a Mission. He gathered an army to train and prepared to attack the Midianite Army using human tactics. God had other plans. The Victory would not be attributed to superior strength and weaponry. God told Gideon to first send home anybody who wasn't serious about the mission. Then, he ordered the remaining soldiers to drink some water from the stream. Those who Plunged down to drink the water (like sheep) were rejected. Those who scooped up the water in their hands and lapped it with their tongues (like a Sheep-Dog!) proved that they were vigilant and on-duty, even when slaking their thirst. These were the me God wanted. They numbered only 300...against the entire Midianite Army.

That would make a great Graphic Novel!
