As I walked around the latest Archaeological Dig near the Temple Mount, I noticed how carefully the Scientists marked any speculative "restoration". A ruined wall would be rebuilt with similar stone, but a two inch wide yellow line showed where the Ancient Stones ended and the Restoration Stones began. This is the ethical way of doing Archaeology. One doesn't just rebuild something and call it "History". Everybody has their own opinion about how something used to look, and so the "Restoration" is bound to have some built-in prejudice.

Saddam Hussein (remember him?) fancied that he was Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon. He was supposedly a Muslim by faith, but his actions in "Restoring" Babylon belied him even that.

Saddam defied even the most basic rules of Archaeology. Babylon was a ruin in the desert. The Bible says it should never be rebuilt, but instead of just doing a proper Dig, maybe a little well-marked restoration to show the supposed height of the walls, or a nice Museum displaying any found artifacts, Saddam had all new bricks brought in and tried to rebuild the City. Any Scientific or Historical Value was lost. Saddam didn't want to STUDY Babylon, he wanted to REVIVE Babylon.

Well, we know what happened to Saddam. His crime against Archaeology and History pales in comparison to the crimes he committed to his own people and his country.

In Today's Reading, we see Moses musing about his People, and being in "Shock and Awe" at how the One True God has Chosen and Preserved them. When Moses was thinking these thoughts, there had only been one Captivity and One Deliverance. He was right in the middle of it.

In the centuries after Moses death, there were other instances of the same Captivity and Deliverance. One was when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the Temple, burned Jerusalem, and took the People of Judah into captivity in Babylon. That one lasted 70 years. King Cyrus of Persia is credited with a decree to allow the Jews (as they were now called) to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild.

The next time this happened was in 70AD when the Roman Empire destroyed the Temple once again, and dispersed the Jews to the far reaches of the Empire.

Although Jerusalem was conquered again and again, it didn't become a home for the Jews until 1967. Even today, the site of the Temple is in Muslim hands.

Today, Jewish Archaeologists dig, dig, dig outside the Temple Mount and uncover much evidence of the Second Temple Period, while the Muslims dig, dig, dig inside the Temple Mount to erase it. The irony is that the "insiders" dumped all their waste outside the wall, and made a big pile of dirt FILLED with artifacts that prove the Biblical account. Many students put in a few hours sifting the dirt, and some real treasures have been found.

The musings of Moses are even more astounding today than when he wrote them. What other Nation has been conquered, Exiled for Centuries, and then restored to their land? Even ONCE, this would be considered a Miracle, but this has happened to the Jews THREE TIMES.

Makes ya think that maybe God has a Plan for them.

Amazing how God in His wisdom and grace PRESERVES that which needs " Preserving"...
