15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:

23 And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.

The other day, we talked about Chiasms in the Bible. These are literary devices that go "There and back Again", as the Great Literary Figure J.R.R. Tolkien subtitled his book "The Hobbit". Homer's Odyssey is another great example of "There and Back Again", and the Bible has more Chiasms than you can count. Nearly every couplet in Proverbs is a chiasm, because contrasting couplets were a main feature of Hebrew Poetry. English Poetry has meter and rhyme, but Hebrew Poetry focuses more on contrast. The meter is still there, but gets lost in translation, which leaves us with contrasting chiasm.Students of Literature call this a "Chiastic Structure".

Psalm 1 is a perfect example:

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.


The Blessings pronounced in the first part of this Chapter in Deuteronomy line up with the Blessings in the first few verses of Psalm 1. But both Psalm 1 and Deuteronomy 28 go up a glorious path of blessing from God because of their trust and obedience to His Word.

But, if Blessings come to those who trust in the Lord, what happens to those who scoff at them? It's all downhill from there.

The contrast between the Blessings and Curses can't be ignored.
