If you want to see something really sad, Go into your chosen Search engine, and type in these key words:

Borscht Belt, Catskill Resort Ruins

You will find hours of videos, tons of pictures, and lots of commentary about the "Good Ol' Days" of the Jewish Resorts in the Mountains that once thrived there.

The popularity of these resorts waned when Air-Conditioning changed New York City into a place where people could actually survive the summer heat without having to flee to the mountains. It's also theorized that these luxurious, all inclusive resorts failed when discrimination against Jewish vacationers became a disreputable relic of the past. (Some will argue that it's still there, and on the rise. Ugh)

Many of the Comics we watched on TV got their beginnings in these Resorts. The Speech Patterns and Syntax of the comedians became American Lingo. It's still very much a part of the "New York Accent", which is immediately detectable. Thanks to TV, Radio, and the Movies, the Borscht Belt Dialect has become part of "Americana".

A favorite line from the Catskills Comics has its roots in Scripture:

"I got Good News,
And I got Bad News."

Isaiah Preached that way usually putting the bad news first, then tempering it with the good news. The Book of Proverbs divides the Good News/Bad News into poetic couplets. The Couplets don't rhyme, but instead follow what Literature Fans call a "chiasm". That's when your line goes up one side, and comes down on the other. "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, is a perfect example of a "chiasm". In fact, its subtitle is "There and Back Again." The movies based on The Hobbit weren't a chiasm, because instead of going "there and back again", they just went on and on, and on. It's one of those strange times when one can read the whole book in less time than it takes to watch the movies.🥸

Moses, in true Borscht Belt Fashion, starts with the Good News. This section of Deuteronomy is all about Blessings and Curses. The Blessings are really wonderful, and the curses are dire.

In true chiastic pattern, Moses takes us up the hill with all the Blessings. Tomorrow he will give us the "Bad News" which are the Curses that will come from Disobedience to God's Law. The Blessings and Curses match up, each the opposite of each other.

The Curses for Disobedience mostly concern the Land. Here's something I wrote years ago, when we went through The Book of Isaiah:

In this chapter we read of the cataclysmic effect of God's Judgment upon the nations. Years ago, such desolation could not be imagined, so was thought to be hyperbole from a rather cranky old prophet. How could such devastation happen that would even affect the very air, water, and wildlife?

Fast forward to the late Twentieth century. The thriving and prosperous town of Pripyat, Ukraine suddenly became world-famous on 26 April 1986, when the No.4 light water graphite moderated reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant had an explosion and subsequent meltdown. In a split second, the town and its environment became poisonous to all life. The city was abandoned and closed to the public.

Thirty years later, wildlife has taken over. It was an unexpected situation, as most people assumed that nothing would ever live there again. The area is still poisonous and closed to any but the most intrepid and monitored traveler. As odd as it seems, the scene closely resembles that of Isaiah 34.

In an odd twist of fate, the New International Version of the Bible written in the Ukrainian Language back in the 1970s, translated the name of the "Wormwood Star" in Revelation 8:10 as "Chernobyl". "Wormwood" is a star that falls to earth and poisons the fresh water so that a third of the wildlife dies. It is a translation of the Greek word "absinthos" from which we get the word "Absinthe".

Who knew we could connect Moses, The Catskills, Chernoble, Absinth, The Hobbit, and Ancient Hebrew Poetry?
