Isaiah 53:5-7
21st Century King James Version
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions;
He was bruised for our iniquities.
The chastisement of our peace was upon Him,
and with His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned every one to his own way;
and the Lord hath laid on Him
the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted,
yet He opened not his mouth;
He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter;
and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb,
so He openeth not His mouth.

The story of the good thief (St. Dismas) in Luke 23:39-43 is a powerful testament to God’s mercy. Jesus promised him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise,” despite his criminal past. This highlights that no one is beyond repentance and grace—even in the final hour.
He died under the Old Covenant, while Jesus was still on the Cross. The New Covenant was not yet fully ratified. As Hebrews 9:16-17 explains: “Where a will [covenant] is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. For a will takes effect only at death.” Jesus sealed the New Covenant with His own blood (Luke 22:20; Matthew 26:28; 1 Corinthians 11:25), declaring “It is finished” (John 19:30). Only after His death and Resurrection did the full blessings of the New Covenant flow, especially at Pentecost (Acts 2).
The Old Covenant given through Moses (Exodus 19–24; Deuteronomy), was a “guardian” or tutor pointing to Christ (Galatians 3:23-25; 4:1-7). It included animal sacrifices that could not take away sins permanently (Hebrews 10:1-4; 8:7-9). Jeremiah prophesied its replacement: “Behold, the days are coming… when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel… not like the covenant… which they broke” (Jeremiah 31:31-32).
The New Covenant is established in Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice (Hebrews 9:11-15, 26-28; 10:10-18). It brings interior transformation (“I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts” — Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 36:26-27), forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 8:12), and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The good thief received extraordinary grace in a unique, transitional moment—dying alongside the Savior as the Old Covenant ended and the New began.
His situation is not the ordinary pattern for those living after the Resurrection and Pentecost. Under the New Covenant, the Lord commands us to be born again through Baptism (John 3:5; Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:38), to repent and believe, and to live as disciples in the Church, the Body of Christ (Ephesians 2:19-22; 1 Timothy 3:15).
God’s mercy remains infinite, and deathbed repentance is always possible. Yet the normal path Christ established for us is fuller incorporation into His New Covenant through faith, repentance, and the sacramental life He entrusted to the Church. As Hebrews 8:6 states, “Christ has obtained a ministry which is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.”

Philippians 2:6-11
Who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
Therefore God also highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Only in St. Luke do we find this dialogue between Jesus and the two criminals who were crucified on either side of him. Only in Luke do we have this man—the tradition calls him Dismas, the good thief.
Dismas, his first move is to admit his sin: “Look, we’re being punished, but it fits our crimes.” In other words, “I’m guilty. I’m not making excuses, not blaming somebody else... I’m admitting I’m a sinner.”
This is the path of salvation: admitting that we’re sinners
Dante said that all God needs to forgive the sinner is one tear of repentance... “Jesus, remember me,” and then the Lord says, “Amen, today you’ll be with me in paradise.”
