U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a fence-mending visit to the Vatican on Thursday to underscore strong bilateral ties, after U.S. President Donald Trump's broadsides against Pope Leo XIV for his opposition to the Iran war angered the Holy See and sparked ongoing sparring between them.
The U.S. State Department said that the meetings with Leo and the Vatican's top diplomat covered peace in the Middle East and "underscored the strong relationship between the United States and the Holy See," and reflected the "enduring partnership" between them.

Rubio: They told me the Vatican was a tough venue.
Iran killing approximately 2,000 US citizens since 1979 including the Lebanon barracks bombing, possibly 30-40,000 plus unarmed dissidents mowed down in cold blood by Iran in 2026 uprisings in Iran, and dangers from deliberate missile attacks on civilian areas inside Israel.....and not a word from the Pope. Except all sides want peace or something bland like that.
That Pope is promoting and enabling evil by Iran and Hamas.
I am working on accepting that all Catholics are not like him. My grandmother born in 1898, of Blessed Memory, taught me to distrust and dislike all Catholics. I disobeyed her.
Her grandparents were Methodists in England who were in conflict with Catholics.
I think the Pope accepts Jesus’ “love thy neighbor” unless he is Donald Trump and his followers like me.
Someone tell the pope he can’t have it both ways...nukes and peace.
