Catholic Church in Charlotte continues to see surge in new members this Easter

Easter is bringing a wave of new members into the Roman Catholic Church in Charlotte, continuing a growing trend across the region.

Over the past two years, the number of people joining the Catholic Church in Charlotte has increased by more than 40% each year. Church leaders expect that figure to rise again this Easter weekend.

At St. Matthew Catholic Church in Ballantyne alone, about 100 people are expected to be baptized — among them, Seth Miller.

“I had to be a good example, a good leader in the household,” Miller said. “That’s what was originally kind of the catalyst behind it.”

Miller said he grew up attending church sporadically but began to seriously explore his faith after getting married and becoming a father to three daughters. The responsibilities of family life, he said, pushed him to seek a deeper commitment.

Last Easter, 1,743 people joined the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte — a 43% increase from 2024. That year, 1,221 joined, which was up 43% from 2023. Diocese leaders say even more people are expected to join this year.

Bishop Michael Martin said the increase reflects broader cultural shifts, with people searching for meaning and stability.

“People are trying their best to search through the reality of bigger questions,” Martin said. “They’re attracted to something that’s been around for a long time, and that has stood the test of time.”

For Miller, the decision to join the church is rooted in both faith and family.

“Becoming a dad to three beautiful daughters and having a wife that looks up to me to kind of lead the household — that was all the motivation I needed,”

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Catholics join the faith during the Easter vigil on Saturday night across the diocese. There are 93 churches here. The church reports a population of 575,000, which is up 10.7% since 2020. It reflects similar trends across the nation.

Very interesting.
I’m old school Lutheran.
Catholics don’t do communion
correct, biblically.

How about stop criticizing how someone professes their salvation in Christ ?
Maybe we can rejoice in those things we agree instead of spreading hate over those things we disagree?
He is Risen! ❤️

I fully agree.
That is a two way street.
Stop bitching at me for
not doing what you
want.

God will be the judge,
in matters of religion.
Not man.

This phenomenon is huge, worldwide, and a sacred (Catholicism and Evangelicalism) as well as a paired secular (conservatism) movement. I call it the Fifth Great Awakening. Your indexing system may vary. But it is something Americans do from time to time and has been pretty well documented by historians since at least 1670. Maybe this particular Awakening is a coda to the End of the World. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if it were, given all the craziness and evil in the past 150 years which seems unsurpassable.

My parish in the Charlotte ‘burbs had almost 1,600 in attendance at the Spanish Palm Sunday Mass. (The building’s capacity, according to the Fire Department, is 1,220. Oops.)

We’ve had clergy problems the last few years, but our assistant pastor, Father Newguy, says, “Hold on!” Father Dementia will reach mandatory retirement age in a little over a year.

If there is increase in the number of Catholic faithful in the Charlotte, it is because of the Holy Spirit, and not the awful bishop there.

A lot of us in the Charlotte Diocese think the Bishop is doing excellently.

Well, it is the Holy Spirit, perhaps working through the local bishop, sometimes inspire of. Have a blessed Easter you two! Christ is risen!

Everything happens through the Holy Spirit, one way or another.

My old employer, TAN Books, is now located there. Publisher Conor Gallagher, in his podcast, gave a forum to a Canon Lawyer to answer questions posed about the Bishop's actions. It is worth listening to.
