Genesis 15

1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying: 'Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield, thy reward shall be exceeding great.'
2 And Abram said: 'O Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give me, seeing I go hence childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?'
3 And Abram said: 'Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed, and, lo, one born in my house is to be mine heir.'
4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying: 'This man shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.'
5 And He brought him forth abroad, and said: 'Look now toward heaven, and count the stars [הכוכבים], if thou be able to count them'; and He said unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.'

The following observations are not a rejection of 'So shall thy seed be' for meaning a vast multitude. That much is evident from verse 17:

Genesis 22

15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven,
16 and said: 'By Myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son,
17 that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18 and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast hearkened to My voice.'

And as referenced in the NT:

Hebrews 11

11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, [so many] as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Yet here are modern word plays with simple meanings made available in their time:

5 And He brought him forth abroad, and said: 'Look now toward heaven, and count the stars [הכוכבים], if thou be able to count them'; and He said unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.'

The letter hei functions as the definite article and has the value of 5; therefore, "the stars" -- ha-kokavim -- is "5 stars"...
