Here I am offering a simple but different perspective involving the creation and meaning of the name Abraham.
1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him: 'I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and be thou wholehearted.
2 And I will make My covenant between Me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.'
3 And Abram fell on his face; and God talked with him, saying:
4 'As for Me, behold, My covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be the father of a multitude of nations.
5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram [אברם], but thy name shall be Abraham [אברהם]; for the father of a multitude of nations have I made thee.
6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and thee and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee.
8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.'
9 And God said unto Abraham: 'And as for thee, thou shalt keep My covenant, thou, and thy seed after thee throughout their generations.
10 This is My covenant, which ye shall keep, between Me and you and thy seed after thee: every male among you shall be circumcised.
A little background on the traditional explanation for the etymology of Abraham's name:
Abraham and Sarah
Abram (or Avram) is a contraction of two words, av Aram, meaning "father of Aram," and Sarai means "my princess." Avraham and Sarah had always dedicated their lives to inspiring others to abandon idolatry and serve G-d; nevertheless, it was all in a private capacity. Avram was only the "father of Aram," his own birthplace, and Sarai was "my princess," personal and private, not to be shared by all.
Their previous names were insufficient to empower them in their new mission
G-d changed their names because they were going global. Abram and Sarai were becoming the father and mother, the king and queen of all of humanity, responsible for and dedicated to everyone's service of G-d.
This new mission of theirs was expressed almost immediately and tangibly after their name changes with the birth of Isaac, the forefather of the Jewish people, who are called on to be a "light unto the nations."3
And so Abram's name became Abraham, a contraction of the words "av hamon [goyim]," meaning "the father of all nations,"4 and Sarai's name became "Sarah," which means "the princess." By changing their names to reflect a broader leadership, G-d imbued them with Divine energy commensurate to their new, more global life-mission.
3. Isaiah 49:6.
4. As to why he retained the reish, and did not change to "Avham," see Rashi to Genesis 17: 5.
Source references (the English text from the original is in bold), line 5:
בַּתְּחִלָּה נַעֲשָׂה אָב לַאֲרָם, וּלְבַסּוֹף נַעֲשָׂה אָב לְכָל הָעוֹלָם כּוּלּוֹ
The Gemara explains: Initially he became a father, a minister, and prominent person, only to Aram, so he was called Abram, father [av] of Aram, and ultimately with God's blessing he became the father of the entire world, so he was called Abraham, father of the masses [av hamon], as it is stated: 'I have made you the father of a multitude of nations' (Genesis 17:5).
Returning to Genesis 17:
The Torah's explanation for the name change has much to do with seed.
The name went from Abram [אברם] to Abraham [אברהם] when God planted a letter hei [ה] inside. The word hei [הא]:
Heh ( Hei) (Hey) (ה) is the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet
Numerical value: 5
Sound: "H"
Meaning: 1. here is 2. to be disturbed 3. behold>>>
MeaningThe word heh has three meanings: The first is "here is," as in the verse, "Here is seed for you"16 (heh lachem zera).17 The next is "to be disturbed," as it states in Daniel, "And I Daniel was disturbed....(nih'yeisi)."18 And the third is "behold"19 as in "Behold, this is our G-d...," (hinei Elokeinu...) which refers to beholding a revelation. These three definitions converge. When we're born and come into this world, G-d gives us seeds (i.e., the potential to be productive and make good of our lives). Many times, however, we become disturbed and confused and lose sight of our objectives. Eventually, though, every Jew will come to do teshuvah and acknowledge his or her Creator. He or she will then behold the revelation of G-d.
By elevating one's thought and speech and translating them into action, one reveals the yechidah, the fifth level and spark of Moshiach within his soul,20 and this will bring us to the Ultimate Redemption.
Therefore, based on the background information, I am offering that the organic concept behind "av hamon [goyim]," meaning "the father of all nations," , is simply, "[the letter] Hei is seed for you".
Their previous names were insufficient to empower them in their new mission
This new mission of theirs was expressed almost immediately and tangibly after their name changes with the birth of Isaac
Or, how a "he will laugh" Isaac seed was able to break ground from a couple of old people. Isaac was the sower of the family (Gen 26:12)
(hayseed -- A rustic person; a yokel or bumpkin.)
Hei is seed
to be disturbed.
Behold:
All the flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today.

Likutei Moharan 56:3:8
(8) We merit this through Torah study. This is because the Torah is the Name of God, and the name of a thing is its vessel; within this name is contained the life force of that thing. As it is written, "living soul that is its name" (Genesis 2:19) -- contained in the name of each thing is its soul and life force. This is why when we call a person by his name, we gain his attention immediately, because his total soul and life force are contained within his name
Not mentioned there, but related to the topics at hand, is that the phrase "is its name"/"he is his name" (hu shmo, הוּא שְׁמוֹ) = 358 = Mashiach [משיח].
The verse explains that Adam was the world's first taxonomist:
Genesis 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
In more recent history, Carl Linnaeus is known as the "father of modern taxonomy". I'm mentioning that because when it came time for the subject of the human specimen:
Linnaeus treated himself as the type specimen (holotype) of H. sapiens.[190] In 1959, W. T. Stearn designated Linnaeus as the lectotype of H. sapiens,[191][192] following the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, since the sole specimen that he is known to have examined was himself.[193]
Abra-HAM means father of MANY nations. That means Gentile nations ALSO because the seed was the seed of FAITH. Not blood/genetic.
Also worth noting that Sarah was post-menopause when she had Isaac, and set off a pattern of women chosen by God in the Bible who were barren — it should humble Christians who stigmatize things like infertility or late parenthood.
Again, God cares more about FAITH than biology.
Who in the world does THAT? I've never heard a Christian guilt-trip a woman for being infertile. You need to find another group of Christians to hang around with. Yeesh.
“The Name Abraham is Where a Seed was Planted”
No, just the opposite.
Abraham planted his seed into both Hagar and Sarah
Because of his actions great civilizations were destroyed and the world has been at war ever since.
I’m thinking around the Abrahamic
Covenant....
BUMP
100% correct and reading Galations 3 Paul explains it.
If anyone rejects Pauls teaching, which is through the holy spirit, they reject everything.
Then, rejecting that teaching rejects the meaning of the book of Jonah as well as other teachings.
We are ALl recipients of the promis given to Abraham.
As you say. All are included in the promise.
You should be thinking about meeting Christ had with Moses and Elijah and the fulfillment of the Old Covenant...if you follow Christ that is.
Somehow the broader concept of the post (of God planting a seed for a mission to be accomplished) sailed right on by..

Layers of meaning, on top of the classic view that Rome is Edom is Western Civ, the head of which is America:
Medieval Jews saw the story as possibly anti-Roman, and Rashi interpreted 'Rome' as meaning not the physical city but the part of paradise overlooking Rome. This neutralised and spiritualised the story and reconciled it with legends of the Messiah being carried alive to paradise.
Later, Maharsha went further and suggested that Rome wasn't mentioned at all as 'de Romi' should be read 'deromi', southern, referring to the Messiah being found in the southern part of paradise.

The source text confirms:
.וְהֵיכָא יָתֵיב? אַפִּיתְחָא דְּרוֹמִי
And where is he sitting? At the entrance of Rome. (alt: at the southern entrance)
"seventy" יָתֵיב = שִׁבעִים
(= 422)
and dromi sounds dreamy, or like a "draw me" gate.
The south *is* the sunny side, the location of Sunshine, because it is the path of the Sun.
Paradise, located on the south side of the park, features subalpine meadows, the Jackson Visitor Center, the historic Paradise Inn, and epic mountain views.

Thanks for your focus on faith’s groundbreaker, our noble model, and his centrality in God’s love-mission. God decided to use seeds in His reproductive economy, and quite literally it ran through Abraham. How I’m looking forward to meeting him and Sarah!
It is a cautionary tale for me, that despite an abundance of statements both in Scripture and from the Lord it came as a surprise to the apostles that the Gentiles were included in that economy. I must not belittle them but rather avoid pride in what I think I know.
The usage of the word “THEE” is a personal blessing. Not on anyone claiming to be of Judah.

Sound doctrine builds faith.
Same to you, Red!
It is a matter of both flesh and blood and of faith. The first promise was to Eve. Abraham happened to be an agent told of his part in God’s salvivic plan, as were David and all the patriarchs.
There must be a real, human. flesh and blood atonement for Adam’s trangression and it’s consequences. Christ alone is that Atonement, and He is no ghost, but real flesh and blood.
Shame those sunflowers seeds are OU-D now. ;)
You mentioned somewhere Avraham is the High Father? Is there Greatful Dead connection?
(And don’t let the throngs of “There was cannabis in the incense!” Freepers take over the thread.)

On a kaneh bosem high note, Reid Wiseman is the commander of the Artemis II mission. The weird is the tell:
