Palm Sunday: Why Did Jesus Ride a Donkey and Why Is That Comforting?

“Donkeys were portrayed in Scripture as symbols of service, humility, suffering, and peace. Therefore, riding a donkey symbolized the arrival of peace.”

Riding a horse would have symbolized war, but Jesus was declaring peace. By riding a colt, Jesus was essentially saying, “Yes, I am your king. The time you’ve been waiting for has arrived. But things aren’t going to happen as you expect.” The people welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday expected Him to bring peace to their circumstances through a military victory over the Romans. Jesus came to bring peace between humans and God. He also gives us peace here on earth amid difficult circumstances.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” - Zechariah 9:9

Jesus rode the donkey because the jews made him ride it.

Just like the jews killed Jesus.

Of course that’s hogwash, Jesus layed down his life just like God told us years before in the old testament. Was fortold about the donkey too.

Revelation 19:11 (KJV)
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.”

Revelation 19:14
“And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.”

The scene represents His second coming in power, very different from His humble first coming.

Just so accuracy is present, and not your false explanation. Jesus did not ride the donkey because he was made to do it. If you still think so, support your false claim. Bible scholars, of which I am not one, know that Jesus rode a donkey as prophesied by Zechariah in Zechariah 9:9. Jesus had told others in his ministry that he did not come to create the law, but he came to fulfill it. The ride on the donkey was fulfilling what had been foretold hundreds of years before.

Amen. It was prophecy.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

It was prophesied The Messiah would arrive in Jerusalem that way.

Zexhariah 9:9

9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.

In the Old Testament, when King David was dying and had to name his successor to the throne, he had his son Solomon ride through the city streets of Jerusalem on the royal mount: a mule. The people welcomed and acclaimed Solomon with shouts of praise. It was but a prediction/foreshadowing of the true King, the true Son of David, the true Prince of Peace (the name Solomon means “man of peace”). Palm Sunday, then, is the true fulfillment of that coronation parade.

I think it because there were no F-150s.

If the opportunity ever presents, for you and your children to meet a friendly donkey, by all means, take it. In the wild, male donkeys (jacks) tend to be loners, but female donkeys (jennies) tend to group together, not just for mutual defense, but mainly out of *affection* and *friendship*.

Raised on a farm, donkeys sometimes behave like large, friendly dogs. They will follow people around, looking for affection and handouts. They are easy to ‘spoil’ with offerings.

Far-flung Oatman, AZ, is known for the wild donkeys that live there. Stores often leave their doors open in case they want to visit.

(the slightly smaller Mexican version of donkeys are known a “burros”.)
