🇺🇸Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem 🇮🇱(3/25/26)[Prayer]

A New Study For A New Year: Personalities

Exodus 4:24-31

24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him.

25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.

26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.

27 And the Lord said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him.

28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the Lord who had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him.

29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel:

30 And Aaron spake all the words which the Lord had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.

31 And the people believed: and when they heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father In Heaven,

Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!

You Alone Are Worthy To Be Praised And Worshiped,

For Your Alone Are Holy,

Righteous,

and Infinitely Just!

You Are Eternally Faithful,

and there is no Shadow of Turning with You.

Light and Darkness Can Not Occupy The Same Space,

and There is No Darkness With You.

Good and Evil Can Not Dwell Together,

And There is No Evil With You.

Yet You Always Judge Rightly,

With Grace and Truth,

Justice and Mercy,

Wisdom and Kindness,

Firmness and Gentleness.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

”The Greatest Of these Is Love.”

If you would like to be on or off the Daily Ping List, please let me know.

Today's Scene doesn't appear in any Bible Movies that I know of, nor is it a typical Sunday School Lesson. It does, however, tell us quite a bit about Moses's Personality, and Zipporah's too.

Some years ago, I examined this Passage in depth, and consulted quite a few Commentaries.

Remember, though, "Commentaries" are not Scripture. They are interpretations. Here's what I wrote: (Back then, I thought that the Midianites were pagans, but my opinion on that has changed):

One of my favorite TV shows in the 1970s was "Mission Impossible". The agent would pick up a recorded message from a secret source, and listen to the tape for his next mission. It was always something totally impossible. The the tape player would then "Self-Destruct" (thus adding a new idiom to our vocabulary) and the episode would continue with the clever way the Impossible Mission is accomplished.

People have been debating the meaning of today's Passage for thousands of years. Cecil B. DeMille wisely left this scene out of his movie The Ten Commandments, and I understand why.

But I promised that I would NOT leave anything out, so here we are with this troubling verse. Even the footnote by the editors of this translation state :

"NIV footnote c. Exodus 4:25 The meaning of the Hebrew for this clause is uncertain".

And so, I will offer my humble thoughts on this Passage, knowing that it may or may not be the best interpretation.

Moses himself, was probably circumcised. Since it was mandated to circumcise male children at 8 days after birth, and Moses was hidden by his family for three months, it can be assumed that his own family took care of it. This is further supported by Pharaoh's daughter, who took one look at the little boy in the basket and said "This is a Hebrew child." Moses then was taken into Pharaoh's household, but continued to be nursed by his own mother, who got paid for the privilege. One can infer that, along with Mother's Milk, Moses received some religious instruction about The One True God. But he was also being instructed in the arcane arts and sciences of the Egyptian Religion, and, as a grown man, must have known that there was something "different" about him.

Fleeing Pharaoh after committing homicide, Moses finds himself "a stranger in a strange land." But he quickly accommodates himself to his new environment, gets married, has children, and pretty much "goes native". And then came the Burning Bush. We know that Moses was reluctant to accept this Mission Impossible. He tried making excuses, claiming inadequacy, saying that his own people wouldn't listen to him, emphasizing his own disability (speech impediment?), and so on. In a way, Moses was right. It WAS an Impossible Mission. But, as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob all learned, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD. After consulting with his Father-In-Law, Moses heads back to Egypt, with his wife and son.

But, Moses has not even marked his own son with the Sign of the Covenant, and here he was, going back to Egypt to present himself to God's Covenant People? Really? What kind of a Leader and Deliverer was that? This obnoxious hubris , after all that "humility" at the Burning Bush was enough to make God want to ZOT him en-route and cancel the whole mission.

Now, Zipporah, daughter of a Midian Priest, also knew that there was something "different" about her husband. God used her, a foreign, possibly pagan, women, and gave her the knowledge as to what the issue was and how to correct it. It must have been excruciating for her, a Mom, to perform this operation on her own little boy. But, as she was a shepherdess, she must have had some basic surgical skills as they did not have veterinarians back then.

Her words, "Bridegroom of Blood" are so obscure in the Hebrew that they may have been in Zipporah's own Midianite Language.

The Phrase "Bridegroom of Blood" brings out some symbolism that echoes that of the Gospels and the Book of Revelation.

From the time of Abraham, covenants were sealed in Blood. The Covenant of Circumcision sealed God to His People, and the Ultimate Test (an Impossible Mission) was when Abraham was called upon to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac. It is the pivotal point in Genesis, and there are so many parallels to Calvary that it is mind-boggling. There is no way it is coincidence. In fact, it is IMPOSSIBLE.

Without the Resurrection, Calvary would have just been a tragic execution of an Innocent Man. Without Calvary, though, there would have been no Resurrection and No Return of Jesus as The Bridegroom.

In Revelation, before Jesus is presented as the Bridegroom, He is presented as "The Lamb Who Was Slain."

So He is, Indeed, a "Bridegroom of Blood", the Fulfillment of the Covenant, and Our Deliverer.

The awesome thing about the Burning Bush was that it did not "Self-Destruct."

Personality-wise, Moses could be stubborn, and even neglectful at times. Zipporah, on the other hand had a temper. She could have "taken care of business" without the "demonstration". It looks like both of them could use a little Marriage Counseling.

Why did the Holy Spirit allow this to get into our Bible? This was an issue between a husband and wife, and none of our business. However, if one ponders the layers of meaning in this behavior, one can see how it all points to our own "Bridegroom of Blood".

He was the One Who allowed His Own Blood to be shed to bring us all into His Covenant.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

A Prayer for Understanding Each Other

Dear Lord,

Give us ears that listen before they judge,
and hearts steady enough to hold another person’s story
even when it doesn’t match our own.

Help us speak plainly,
but also hear the meaning behind the words.
Let us trade suspicion for clarity,
and let truth rise higher than pride.

Where we disagree, keep us honest.
Where we misunderstand, give us patience.
Where we are divided, show us the bridge.
Guide our conversations so they sharpen,
not shatter.

And let us remember that every person here
carries more than we can see.

Amen.
