13 And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.

How many of you have heard this somewhat dismissive expression:

"That's a "First World" Problem!"?

It's a very modern quotation that derives itself from the term "Third World", a term that was coined the year I was born, in the depth the the Cold War. While its original meaning had to to with NATO, The Warsaw Pact, and Nonaligned Countries, it has come to mean nations mired in poverty.

The Term "Third World" is no longer "Politically Correct", but, interestingly enough, it's what one of my favorite Reggae Bands have dubbed (pun intended) themselves.(LINK)

Here's a comparison:

THIRD WORLD PROBLEM: "I can't get clean water for my baby, she's malnourished, and the nearest clinic is several miles away"

FIRST WORLD PROBLEM: "I'm so upset! My Health Insurance Doesn't Cover My Face Lift!"

OK...maybe that's a bit cruel, but you catch my drift.

However, there are certain issues that transcend the First, Second, or Third World. By Modern Standards, Jacob and his Family lived in a Third World Environment. No Electricity, No Health Insurance, and No Infrastructure (especially Water) except for what Jacob himself provided by digging wells.

Yet, Leah and Rachel faced problems that exist even in Today's World. Sibling Rivalry, Jealousy, Envy, Infertility, Blame-Shifting, Marital Discord, and even Surrogacy are all in this little Passage of Scripture.

No matter what modern conveniences we have, there are some Personality Traits that transcend all the Centuries, Politics, and Economic label we dub ourselves.

Human Nature seems to be the same from millennium to millennium.

Now I'm going to wash my face...Argh! I've run out of 100% Organic Natural Extra-Mild Facial Cleanser! (First World Problem).
