If Laban thought he was doing any favors for his eldest daughter Leah, he was sadly mistaken. Instead, his deception doomed her to a loveless marriage, and in constant competition with her younger sister. (Centuries later, the Law of Moses would prohibit such arrangements, along with many other Marriage Laws). While the two sisters may have had a lovely relationship before, this situation made them bitter rivals.

Poor Leah! She thought that if she kept having babies, Jacob would eventually love her. Even the names she chose for her sons reflect her desperation. She has four boys in a row, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah. The names of each boy describe Leah's sad journey of desperation and struggle.

Since she was having babies left and right, it's obvious that she and Jacob had Marital Relations. But there was no love. This illustrates a remarkable sensitivity, even of a Nomadic,Tribal, Patriarchal Culture that there IS a DIFFERENCE. Sex without Love is empty and unfulfilling. Leah was performing her duties as a wife, but knew the difference.

Meanwhile, Rachel was getting plenty of both, and not producing any offspring. This didn't seem to bother Jacob, but it bothered Rachel. Her sister Leah was doing something she couldn't. And that made her jealous. She started to take it out on her husband, who, I'm sure, was doing HIS part of the deal, so what was her problem?

This "Baby Contest" would continue for years. (I can't even imagine!). It made both women miserable, and, in the coming Chapters we will see both ladies engage in subterfuge, herbal remedies, superstition, stealing idols, and even a bit of "witchcraft" to get what they want.

Yesterday, one of our Friends remarked on the thread that she felt sorry for Leah. I do too, but God eventually works this out. Leah is buried in the Tomb of the Patriarchs, the Cave of Machpeliah, in Hebron. She is buried with Jacob, her husband. She is considered the Mother of (most ) of the Twelve Tribes.

Rachel, the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, is buried in a little tomb outside of Bethlehem, where she died while on a Journey with her husband.

Ironically, Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin.

Benjamin's name was modified by Jacob after Rachel's death, because the name she gave her newborn meant "Son of my Sorrow".

The birth of Rachel’s 2nd child is prophetic.

It pointed to One who was born in Bethlehem.
She called him “son of sorrow” - like Jesus was a man of sorrow.
Israel changed his name to “son of my right hand” - like Jesus is now at the right hand of God.
