The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X has officially announced that it will proceed with new episcopal consecrations starting from July 1, 2026, a decision of enormous ecclesial significance that reopens one of the most delicate chapters in its relationship with the Holy See. The announcement was made public on February 2, the feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, by the superior general of the Fraternity, Father Davide Pagliarani, during a ceremony held at the International Seminary of Saint Curé of Ars, in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, France.
According to the statement issued from the Fraternity’s General House, the decision has been taken after a long process of reflection, prayer, and internal consultations, and after having explicitly requested from the Holy See a solution that would guarantee the continuity of the episcopal ministry within the Fraternity. The text acknowledges that several formal petitions were addressed to the Pope, both to present the current situation of the Fraternity and to emphasize the objective need to have its own bishops capable of administering the sacrament of Confirmation and holy orders to the faithful attached to Tradition.

Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre died on March 25, 1991.
At least they are giving Rome a few months to bless their endeavor prior to the episcopal ordinations. I hope they consecrate another four.
What the news release does NOT tell us, is who will be consecrated. Also, traditonal form calls for THREE bishops to consecrate so that there is no question of validity. SSPX has two total. Can they find a “friendly” outside of FSSPX to fill out the roster? Maybe Bishop Schneider?
The article was difficult to understand. Is it for real that we’re going to see more SSPX bishops????. How many?. I truly pray this is true.
Hey, if the ChiComs can get away with this (consecrating unauthorized bishops... followed by the Vatican sheepishly assenting after the fact), then why not? The SSPX has gotta do what it’s gotta do. We saw how Bergoglio and his minions tried to kill off the Latin Mass in the final few years of the last pontificate... totally reneging only on Summorum Pontificum but also ditching agreements dating back to John Paul 2. If the Vatican can do that, then why should the SSPX trust them?
Or Strickland.
More often mentioned (whispered), for the number of new bishops to be consecrated, is twelve.
Four is so eighties. 😁
Hi bmc, see #7.
No insight on that, thx for mentioning the issue
SSPX as docile as can be, hence perhaps an explanation for the difference in approach employed by Rome. If in fact Rome rebukes.
SSPX had a break back with Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre when he consecrated Bishops without Vatican approval years ago. Now they want replacements and the Vatican was stonewalling it.
Since they are in communion with Rome still, there is question as to whether a breakdown in this action represents a new point to call it a schism. Bear in mind Pope Francis agreed to allow China to break its treaty and force consecrate Bishops for China.
So if Communists aren’t being excommunicated, then why would SSPX?
You know I wonder if the next step to happen in the Church is for German Bishops to begin consecrating their own replacements as well.
Wouldn’t be the first time. The breakaway German Catholics now called “Lutherans” consecrated Nicolaus von Amsdorf as Bishop of Naumburg in 1542 and Georg von Anhalt as Bishop of Merseburg in 1545.
Down thread there is mention of Commie China bishops. This is a good point.
Pope Benedict removed the ex-communications, SSPX has always been in Union w Rome as irregular. Irregular bec Rome does not want to “do the hard choice”.
Pope Francis gave SSPX the facilities of Confession during Rome’s “Year of Forgiveness” n I believe Marriage.
Will Pope Leo be more open? I pray that he does!
I’m a natural worrier, so will Pope Leo be more open or extract a pound of flesh for openness.
As I say, I pray this goes well!
“As I say, I pray this goes well!”
The fact that the Society just announced that they are going forward on a date certain with new consecrations seems to suggest that negotiations with the post-Bergoglian Vatican either failed, or never materialized in the first place, forcing the SSPX to move forward on its own without support from Rome, just as took place when ABp LeFebvre concluded that he needed to replace himself with four new bishops, with no support from Rome.
While, he has had no problem diving into U.S. politics concerning border control, or blessing ice chunks, or praising heretics like Tucho, or playing the ultimate ecumaniac, he has yet to address:
*The pleas of good german catholics and a few orthodox german bishops requesting him to shut-down the heretical direction of the German synod.
*The pleas of a good number of priests in Charlotte to give them relief from their dictator bishop, Michael Martin.
According to the article the SSPX started requesting an audience with the Pope back in August to discuss consecrating new bishops. It also implies in the article that the Vatican has responded with at least one communication which does not address the issue.
Three strikes, and apparently, you’re out!
He’s basically picking up the fracturing that Pope Francis started.
Soon there will be Bishops ordaining Bishops of their own synods. Archbishops replacing bishops in their own metropolitan regions, or national synods of Bishops doing the same.
There will be further bifurcation of doctrines as these autonomous Churches assert their own interpretations of Doctrine.
Perhaps we’re headed for a patriarchy.
